THE Christmas Guitar Book

I believe I may be the less-than-proud owner of every Christmas guitar book (tab, sheet, and "other") available on Amazon and most of them made great Yule-tide kindling. This book (Contemporary Christmas Guitar), however, stands well above and beyond the rest in both content and quality of performance in the accompanying CD. If you were going to purchase one fingerstyle guitar book for holiday music, this is it. Even if you do not play guitar, the CD alone is worth the purhcase price. The only complaint I have is I only get to play it one season a year.

The book is designed for an intermediate fingerstyle player and will most likely still require ample dedicated practice time before songs are ready to perform for the holidays (read - buy this in the summer or early fall so you have time to learn the music). The songs are meticulously tabbed to the music on the CD and there are no songs on the CD that are not in the book.

The songs have the varied styles of the three greats that play them. David Cullen transforms songs into fluid and syncopated winter wonder, Doug Smith picks past dexterity and pushes beyond what six strings should allow, and Laurence Juber does, as always, an unparallel conversion of a basic song and melody into a music miracle of technically apt fingerings and lyrical beauty.

Very good, nice unique arrangements; but many are in alternate tunings.

The arrangements are fantastic! But be aware that much of this is in alternate tunings. DADGAD, etc. If you're into that it'll be very useful. Unfortunately I am not so that limits my ability to pull these out at a gig. Nonetheless, it's worth the price even for the songs that are in standard tuning.

There are not too much options

This book is the only one of its kind. It describes how linkers and loaders work. Most books describe the compilation process, where the text source code becomes machine code. However, this is the only one that describes how those compiled objects (with machine code) are glued together.

But this book is seriously dated and some parts are too hard to understand. I found the chapter 7 of "Computer Systems: A Programmer's Perspective" better than this one whole book.

Excellent Coverage of Underexplained Concepts

I've yet to come across someone who wrote software who didn't learn most of this material the hard way; most software-related education neglects that real projects need to be built with objects, libraries, debug information, dependencies, and so on, and not just header-file + source file = program. This provides that missing... link.

See what I just did there?

Seriously though, it's far from an exhaustive reference of every build structure for every platform (good luck finding one that is), but it covers most of the things necessary to string a real project together of greater scope than a semester project. An understanding of compilers is fairly important for getting this book. If you put together anything more complex than "link UI to database and you're done here," read this book so someone doesn't have to explain why your project isn't building.

Really Cool Knowledge

It's true that this book is a few years old. But, I emailed the author and he said not much as changed so it's safe to read the book and know you are still learning good stuff. I bought this book to help me understand how compilers and linkers work. Thus far it's been a good education. I can certainly look at my iOS\Objective-C coding and have some understanding of what's going on under the hood, which helps with understanding the language. I am finding that I need to read each section several times over. But, this is normal for a completely new topic of learning. I give this book 4 starts because I"m not completely confident that I'm not learning a few things that are outdated. But, a history lesson doesn't hurt either.

A lighting technique that works!

I've read a few other lighting books over the years but found that Whitehead's approach is superior for creating moods in rooms. My wife and I prototype interiors in our home and the results from "A Practical Guide" have been outstanding. We move and change the lighting with temporary luminaires and various wattages to explore the various possibilities before using them in real designs for clients.

Beware - after buying into his concepts you will be frustrated by the lighting almost everywhere you go.

what a time saver!

As a partner in a residential architectural firm in San Francisco I've become intimately aware of the impact good lighting design has on a project. Through the years I've been through many books, lectures, and showrooms to gain knowledge.
One of my favorite sources is Randall Whitehead. If you've ever seen Randall speak about lighting, you already know his passion for the lighting design industry. If you missed his speaking engagements, fear not, because he has produced a new book that is as entertaining and as informative as his speaking engagements. HIs current book "Residential Lighting, A Practical Guide" is my favorite to date.
In one book, he has combined the technical aspects of the myriad lighting products available on the market, with solid design principals (in text and illustrated form) along with photographs of successful and unsuccessful installations. All this, broken down into exterior and interior applications room by room, makes up one great resource! Now, I can grab one book to determine the best lighting solution for a given situation. What a timesaver!
This book is a must for anyone faced with deciding how best to light a space. And, when it comes to our homes, everyone of us is a designer, whether we like to admit it or not! The formidable decisions existent within the lighting aspect of residential design has just been made a lot easier, thanks to Randall Whitehead.

I laughed while I learned

Randall Whitehead has done a terrific job of explaining what light does and why in a way that is surprisinly entertaining. I can see that this book was written for interior designers and architects, but as a homeowner I found the information easy to understand and very practical.
The other books on the subject tend to be dry and overly technical to the point of being a big snore. This book is unlike any textbook I remember. It is funny while giving you all the 'how to' stuff. There are great photos, cartoons, and drawings throughout the book. Don't miss reading the descriptions of the "before" pictures. You will be laughing, while nodding your head in total agreement.
Anyone who wants to know more about lighting for homes and gardens should read this book.
