A PLACE TO CALL HOME is a novel inspired by true stories set against the First World War, The Roaring Twenties, and the Great Depression. It centers around two well-to-do families joined by an arranged marriage. The action is seen through Angela's eyes as she struggles with the effects on her life of her parents' divorce, a thing viewed in the 1920's as scandalous and tragic. Her travels between New York City and her father's nurturing family in a coal-belt town near Pittsburgh provide humorous and nostalgic anecdotes about growing up in the America of that era.

Mary Ellen Stelling was born in Pittsburgh, PA in 1915 and lived in New York, Florida, North Carolina and Texas before settling in 1946 in Atlanta. For five years a feature columnist on the Women's Page of the Atlanta CONSTITUTION, she was a member of the Georgia Poetry Society and the Poetry Society of Texas. During the 1950's and 1960's, her work appeared in poetry journals in almost every state of the Union, and most newspapers of the time which featured verse published her poems.
She was the wife of a successful retail executive and a dedicated mother who did all the usual time-consuming things to support her son's activities. Behind the scenes she worked as time allowed to create a richly humorous prose document portraying her childhood experiences. Those sketches written in the 1950's totaling about a hundred pages were the seeds which inspired this book. Mrs. Stelling passed away at the age of 82 in 1998.

Peter James Stelling was born in Charlotte, NC, in 1943 and has spent most of his life in Atlanta. A graduate of Washington and Lee University and Grady College of the University of Georgia, he spent four years in advertising in New York before returning home to work for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and for two different firms specializing in Group Incentive Sales Travel and Meeting Planning. One of his most memorable work experiences was serving as road manager for a traveling symphony orchestra during the early years of Robert Shaw's tenure as their Music Director.
Now a contentedly retired father of two and grandfather of four, he is grateful for having had the luxury of time to complete this unique family document. He remains an active supporter of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, the Atlanta Opera, Trinity Presbyterian Church, and serves on the Board of Governors of the Vinings Club in suburban Atlanta.

Evocative and enjoyable - a great read.

When you realize that the narrative and the characters portray the Stelling's family histories, you find that you want to curl up and read A Place to Call Home again. And maybe again. The narrative is peppered with detail and images that transport you into the rumble seats, mansions, bungalows, and hotel suites of the 20's and early 30's. Rural Pennsylvania, Roaring Twenties Manhattan, and the booming Florida coast provide wonderful settings as the characters bloom and the story evolves. I think my mind's eye initially created A Place to Call Home in black and white, but the story in the end is in full color - a wonderful, intimate treat.

Nothing new or exceptional about this book. You would be better off watching a few YouTube videos. Pictures along with the descriptions would have been very helpful. It was a lot shorter and less detailed than I was hoping

Cannabis or simply called marijuana that comes from the leaves, seeds, stems and dried flower heads of the hemp plant that has been use for medical use and recreational sense for many years. There are a lot of facts about cannabis found inside this book including how to properly take care of the plants while it's growing. This is a great little book of knowledge for all. I think everyone should have this insightful book filled with facts about cannabis, it's also a good read for those adults who do not know anything about cannabis and need a quick and easy book to teach them. I am very impressed with the quality of writing and information to the point of inspiring me to purchasing more books by this author.

One of the best books around but not for the beginner, advanced beginner ok, you need to know how to draw somewhat but I love the way things are explained and so happy I got it to home my skills. It works you through composition, light and shadow and different mediums that you can draw with. I would give it 6 stars if I could.

Good for beginners...

Vic Bearcroft's Drawing and Painting Wild Animals is good for people who want to learn how to paint in acrylics or draw in colored or graphite pencil, though not all of his art is as good as the cover image may lead you to think. Many of the drawings/paintings in this book appear blurry or incomplete, especially his pastel paintings, but, since I have practically no talent when it comes to acrylics, and am starting to work with colored pencil, I find this to be a good book on both subjects. If you are looking for a decent all-round animal art instruction book then this is one of the better ones, especially for beginning artists.

A worthy novelization

Having read Aaron Conners' novelization of THE PANDORA DIRECTIVE, I felt compelled to go out and get my hands on his next novel, UNDER A KILLING MOON.
One thing I really liked about PANDORA was that it didn't follow the game slavically--it was different in many ways. I get the feeling that, with MOON, Conners tried going even a step further--and actually write a novel that wasn't a *real* novelization, but more based on the basic storyline.
MOON-the novel differs vastly from MOON-the game (which, coincidentally, is one of my alltime favorite games), in more ways than I care to mention. If you thought Lucia Pernell's sudden sex change in PANDORA was a mite strange, just try and grab a hold of MOON--the novel starts in what would be the game's third chapter!!
While I found this to be a good approach in PANDORA, I found it a little confusing and possibly a bit irritating to read what looks like a stressed attempt to do the same thing done in PANDORA--only twice better. Conners seems to want to outdo himself by taking all the things that were good about PANDORA and doubling it in MOON. For instance, PANDORA featured one or two vivid descriptions of food (how it tasted, the flavors, etc.). MOON does the same, although there's more than five of them.
This does not constitute a bad novel, though, mind you. MOON is an overall pleasure to read, and--considering that a game like MOON, in its core form, is very unsuitable for novelization (how would *you* describe Rook's pawn shop robbery without making the whole thing look like a walkthru for the game?)--Conners pulls it off very well. The new twists to the plot are very imaginitive, and you get the sensation that this was what the cancelled silver screen project was going to look like.
The novel is very suitable, not only for fans of the game, but also for newcomers. Even if you haven't been acquainted with Tex Murphy via the computer monitor, you'll still be able to enjoy this book without losing any overall mood effect.

Tex Murphy is in for it again in his third case

Tex Murphy, the San Francisco P.I. born a hundred years too late returns in his third case. Tex is hired to find a statuette for a woman named Countess Reiner, but after he gets it, he quickly loses it (With a couple blows to the head) and the place that Countess Reiner lived in has been deserted. Tex doesn't like getting hit over the head, or losing a paycheck, so Tex manages to stumble into a case too big for him and way over his head in a story that will leave you wowed and laughing. This is Tex Murphy's third adventure, before this there were two games that never became books: Mean Streets and Martian Memmorandum. If you're a Tex Murphy fan, or a mystery fan, this is a great book.

Not as exciting or overwhelming as "The Pandora Directive", it still packs a powerful punch of nostalgia and holds up it's name in a rare genre of writing.

A thoughtful glimpse into the life of a remarkable woman.

A very thoughtful and somewhat personal at times look into the life of Kalpana Chawla. I gained a small but factual sense of her thoughts and insights, who she was both professionally and personally. A well rounded book with facts, important events, some humor, and pictures. This book was well written and after finishing the book feel I have a better understanding of who Kalpana was, not just an astronaut, but her life's entire work.

Wasted opportunity

This book could have been an excellent story of an exceptionally gifted individual. Unfortunately the author chose to use it to hurl insults at just about anything and everything. So much could have been left unsaid. His opinions added nothing to the story except to continually remind me of his pompous and conceited attitude to most everything. I found it hard to concentrate on the story because every other sentence contained an unnecessary negative comment. Most offensive were his comments about some of Dr. Chawla's fellow crew mates who also so tragically lost their lives that day.

Probably only book on the subject, but much needed and appreciated.

Ok, I'll concede that this may be a bit of a niche subject. I'll concede that this book addresses a very narrow audience. However, for those trying to pursue Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as a full-time occupation, this book is much-needed guide in an arid desert of information. For those of us in BJJ and pursuing sponsorships, it can seem like you're hoisting the donation cup and begging for loose change. In this book, Budo Jake not only describes how you - as an athlete or instructor - can provide value to the companies from whom you're seeking sponsorship, and continue to do so.

In a way, Jake shows us how to solicit for sponsorships with dignity, which I greatly appreciate.

At the end of the book, he provides a pretty detailed list of companies involved with BJJ, as if he were to say: "You know what to say, you know how to say it, now go get it"!
