Awesome book, tells the best story based on what every rushee, pledge, and brother goes through during the best 4 years of his life. Hilarious stories that I will read again and again. Something I will give my future son once he joins a fraternity. BUY even if you aren't in a fraternity (which you should be)

Love this book! It is a good read and interesting to see hazing through a person who has been hazed eyes. This book does not make me proud to be a member of a greek organization, but empowers me to change the way that greek life is seen.

Captures the Moment Well

"Total Frat Move" is a great novel that very accurately captures the feel of what is is like being in a fraternity. The way the characters speak to each other, their interactions with each other, they way the dress and act, and the outrageous events of the book closely mirror the memories I have had in my fraternity. Excessive use of the F-word, the bestowing of nicknames, and generally verbal berating of brothers and random people may be unnerving to outsiders, but the daily interactions I have with my brothers all are similar to how they are described in this book. The Game Day morning drinking schedule/walk-of-shame on the front porch of the Alpha house resonated particularly well, as on one memorable morning at my chapter, a few dozen or so brothers created a human tunnel for one night stands to run through as they left the house. My experiences too have seen police cars, firetrucks, and ambulances flashing their lights in front of our house, and some of my brothers and I have had the sobering pleasure of picking up pledge brothers from jail or the hospital, only to crack jokes about the unfortunate victims (to their faces) just hours later.

Modern views of fraternity life (like the show Greek or American Pie movies) seem to glaze over some important experiences such as pledgeship and simply living in a house. Total Frat Move does justice to these fraternal fundamentals, truly describing how lowly the pledges are, the great ordeal that pledgeship is, the euphoric elation of finally being initiated, and the spontaneous shenanigans that precipitate from putting 50+ 18-22 year old guys under the same roof. Though I have many great memories of my first semester being exposed to Greek Life, I often describe pledgeship as "The greatest time of your life that you will never want to do again". Total Frat Move may be the first entertainment medium that is ballsy enough to call pledgeship as it really is: difficult. It may also be one of the first entertainment media to describe life in a fraternity house outside of sex and partying. "The Frat Castle" chapter of the book nails it, wonderfully illustrating the made-up games live-ins invent, the ever-present spirit of friendly competition between members and not-so-friendly rivalry between neighbor houses, and the porch fratting that occurs in the months of the school year when the temperature is high and course loads are low.

I do wish some other experiences were able to make it into the book, such as Sorority Serenades and Fraternity Intramural Athletics. There have been some truly legendary serenades on my campus, with the sorority "babies" offering pants-tightening performances and free lap dances, and more than a couple interhouse feuds started after particularly competitive intramural games. The author could have also talked a little more about how fraternity brothers -- and especially pledge brothers -- are the greatest friends you will ever have in your life, how these are the guys that will be in your wedding, go on post-grad trips with, and bury you at your funeral. Maybe the author is too young to have experienced this or this is too serious of a tone for such a lighthearted book, but in my experiences, I am already in my pledge brother's wedding, and I have spent my who life observing my dad's relationship with his fraternity brothers -- he is still incredibly close to his brothers even 35 years after he graduated.

"Total Frat Move" is not a perfect book. It won't win literary awards or be taught in high schools across the country as an example of flawless American literature. The characters aren't particularly compelling, nor is the story arch or character development remarkable. But what "Total Frat Move" does do is take true chronicles of fraternity men across the country, novelize these experiences, and immortalize the greatest years of our lives in written, published form. I can relate almost every single one of the characters mentioned with one of my brothers, and I have had similar experiences to those detailed in the book. "Total Frat Move" gives us an unfiltered view of Greek Life as it exists now, in the early part of the 21st century, and does so in a pretty entertaining way. It is a pure example of art imitating life. The book reflects reality, for better or for worse -- and having lived through it, I say it's for better.

Distilling the Essence of Islam Linguistically

This book is very unlike Bernard Lewis' other writing on Islam. "What Went Wrong" is much more accessible to the general reader and I recommend it highly. If, however, you have read most of Professor Lewis' work, and want to continue through his opus, then this will be your cup of tea. The book's title cannot be taken too literally; the subject is the derivation and meaning of words in the major Middle Eastern languages. The bulk of the book consists of his contrasting the usage of Islamic vocabularies with the counterpart words in English, and occassionally, Romance languages. It is fascinating, but even for a reader interested in linguistics, it becomes a blur. The Arabic ( both classic and modern), Turkish, Iranian (and often Hebrew) words flash by. With Islam in the news so much these days, the general reader will recognize some of them, such as "sadr," as in Sadr City, the slum in Baghdad. It turns out that the Arabic word means "chest" literally, but has come to mean centrality, leadership, command. In Turkish it is part of the Grand Vizier's title. It is true, too, that the reader will learn much about the Qur'an, the Traditions of the Prophet, and of sharia, the Muslim law. For instance, since the principal function of government is to enable the individual Muslim to lead a good Muslim life, there is no thought of the separation of church and state. Also, since there is no clerical bureaucracy, there is no formal theocracy, although most Muslims believe that the Prophet Mohammed was the giver of all law. It is a brief 116 page book, and the notes and index comprise a third of its volume. Notwithstanding my admiration of Professor Lewis, I cannot recommend this book to any but Islamic-language speaking people. With their strange, and meaningless, diacritical marks, the foreign words cannot be held in memory once the page is turned, and the import of the exposition is lost.

If you wondered why a celebrated Princeton Professor's book was published by the University of Chicago, it is because it is based on a series of lectures sponsored by the University of Chicago back in 1986. The book was published two years later, and is still in print. You may also be surprised to see that half of the back cover encomiums are from reviewers with Arabic names. This is because there is not one critical, cynical, or condecending word against Islam. It is a throroughly neutral treatment of a topic which was twenty years ahead of its time.

Keep in mind, too, that these chapters were written separately, although with a unifying theme. The result is that some chapters are less "linguistically intensive" than others. For instance, the chapter titled "War and Peace" is a good read on the fundamentals of jihad, and is less of an Arabic vocabulary study than the other chapters are. If you have time for only one chapter, this is it.

A Linguistic Approach

In The Political Language of Islam, Bernard Lewis attempts to trace the development of the political language of Islam from the Mohammedan Era, through the transformation of the religio-political discourse in modern times, to the present day. An eminent scholar of the Middle East and a professor at Princeton University, Lewis, presents an analysis of the discrepancies between Islamic and Western political thought. The book is based on his Exxon Foundation Lectures delivered at the University of Chicago in 1986.

In the first chapter of the book Lewis explains the differences between Islamic and Western political terms. He discusses the meanings and origins of words and compares them to corresponding terms in Western languages. He dwells on various metaphors and images, which reflect the traditional, social and political distinctions between Islamic and Western cultures. Despite these differences, Lewis says, there exist also resemblances between the two culturally different terminologies, due to the fact that the individuals of the two domains live in the same environment. He further adds that some of the similarities may be the result of cultural influences and borrowings.

In the following chapters Lewis introduces an account of the issues relating to the state and political authority in the Muslim world. He elaborates on relations, particularly of the ruler and the ruled, people and the state, obedience and rebellion, rights and duties, justice and oppression and legitimacy and illegitimacy. He examines how certain political elements were perceived and practiced differently in various parts of the "Islamic bloc". Lewis also provides an informative synopsis of the political vocabulary of the Arabic language compared to Turkish and Persian expressions, followed by an analysis of their meanings, origins and changes in time.

The last chapters of the book are devoted to a discussion on war and peace, in which one can find a strong connection to the political climate of the present. Proving against the common belief, Lewis argues that "classic Arabic usage has no term corresponding to the concept of holy war." Therefore, the word "jihad" does not exist in Arabic language as it is perceived today. Its literal meaning connotes "strive" and "effort." But Lewis also makes it clear that "unceasingly to convert or at least subjugate those who have not" is an obligation imposed by God on all Muslims. "It must continue until the whole world has either accepted the Islamic faith or submitted to the power of the Islamic state." Lewis asserts that with an apostate being the worst enemy, rebels, bandits and apostates are enemies against whom it was legitimate to wage war. Yet according to some Muslim teachings the war did not have to be in the military sense, the jihad could be understood in moral and spiritual terms.

An ambiguity as such in Islamic thought among the Muslims reflects contested interpretations of the tenets of political Islam. Particularly following September 11 attacks, the word jihad has been in frequent use in both the Western and Muslim media. Although moderate Muslims and extremists divide amongst themselves in what they would call jihad, the western press instigates the meaning of the term as the holy war of the Muslims. In fact, according to Lewis, a term for holy war does not exist in Islam. As far as the current Islamic militant activism is concerned, contradictions between the political understanding of the moderate Muslims and the extremists as such constitute restlessness among the Muslim population. With the case of how meaning of jihad is perceived being one case, in "The Political Language of Islam" Bernard Lewis elaborates on various aspects of Muslim political language and illuminates the origins and the changes in the meanings of the political vocabulary of Islam. Although the book does not go very deep into details, it gives a lot of basic information on major aspects of political Islam. For those readers interested in studying the subject further, Lewis provides an informative section of links and footnotes. Lewis writes the book from an objective point of view, without taking a pro-Western or pro-Islamic side. Therefore the book is lacks a strong argument. It is more a compilation study, than an argumentative work. "The Political Language of Islam" is highly recommended for academic circles, particularly for the faculty and graduate students of Middle Eastern Studies who would be willing to trace the political character of Islam in linguistic terms.

A Work of First Class Scholarship

Lewis's works are known for their depth of analysis while simultaneously being presented with a simple elegance that makes them approachable to those of us who are not Arabists or Islamicists. In this work he expounds on the language of political discourse in Arabia, Persia, Turkey and Islamic lands in general. Political vocabulary more or less confines and defines the range of this discourse so understanding the language is not mere semantics but indeed critical to the understanding of the development of Islamic political thought.
This short book (116 pages plus 52 pages of detailed notes and references, including an index) traces the etymology behind key political concepts in Islam. If you are an informed reader of current Mideast events encountering words like jihad, ayatollah, imam, shaykh, and fatwa and have a curiosity as to what these words are all about, under what context did they originally appear, and why they have contemporary relevance, you will find this unique volume hard to put down. The book is about the concept behind the word and its historical development more so than philological aspects, although the latter is also well covered. Originally published in 1988, an update reflecting the current state of affairs would be welcome. For example Islamic fundamentalists describe modern society as "jahili," a term originally used as a descriptor of Arabia before the time of the Prophet and related to the Arabic word for ignorance, "jahiliyya." Lewis' thoughts on how Muslims have dealt with attempting to end godless jahiliyya in the past and how it might apply to militant Islam today would have particular relevance as we try to understand the motivations behind the events of September 11th.

About the Author

Craig E. Johnson (PhD, University of Denver) is emeritus professor of leadership studies at George Fox University, Newberg, Oregon, where he taught undergraduate and graduate courses in leadership, ethics, management and communication. During his time at the university he served as director of the George Fox Doctor of Business Administration program and chair of the Department of Communication Arts. Though retired from full-time teaching, Johnson continues to serve as an adjunct professor. He is the author of Organizational Ethics: A Practical Approach (also published by Sage) and co-author, with Michael Z. Hackman, of Leadership: A Communication Perspective. His research findings, instructional ideas, and book reviews have been published in the Journal of Leadership Studies, the Journal of Leadership and Organizational Studies, the Journal of Leadership Education, Academy of Management Learning and Education, the International Leadership Journal, Communication Quarterly, Communication Reports, and other journals. In 2016 he received the George Fox University outstanding graduate faculty researcher award.� Johnson has led and participated in service and educational trips to Honduras, Kenya, Rwanda, New Zealand, China, and Brazil and has held volunteer leadership positions in a variety of religious and nonprofit organizations. Excellent book.

I'm halfway through an MBA program and have found this textbook to be the most interesting and well written one yet. It's quite lengthy, but the concepts are relevant and the content is applicable. Excellent book.

Love and Agony

At the end of book one, I was dismayed to learn that Uriah hadn't fixed everything! His despair echoed within me as I immediately began to read Shaxoa's Gift. In this one, Uriah is rescued from a well of despair when he is given a slim hope that he can break Claire's bond with her Twin Soul. I enjoyed Uriah's time with the Shaxoa even though the whole monster Matwa thing was getting a bit old. Throughout this book, I rooted for Claire and Uriah, who continue to be excellent empathetic characters.

Slow, but emotional

Pretty good, though I think I liked the first novel better. While it was engaging to watch the characters struggle and see how precious their love was, it was almost overwhelming. That said, I enjoyed how the danger seemed to be secrets rather than physical obstacles. It made for a much more complicated story. There were a few twists, though I saw some of them coming. It was a slow-paced story, but I liked the ending and how it will lead up to what promises to be a heart-crushing conclusion.

A FAMED PSYCHOANALYST AND FEMINIST ARGUES FOR WOMEN’S LIBERATION “FIRST”

Juliet Mitchell (born 1940) is a British psychoanalyst and socialist feminist, who taught English literature from 1962 to 1970 at Leeds University and Reading University. She Professor of Psychoanalysis and Gender Studies at Cambridge University, before in 2010 being appointed Director of the Expanded Doctoral School in Psychoanalytic Studies at Psychoanalysis Unit of University College London. She has written/edited other books such as Psychoanalysis And Feminism: A Radical Reassessment Of Freudian Psychoanalysis, Feminine Sexuality: Jacques Lacan and the �cole freudienne, Selected Melanie Klein, etc.

She wrote in the Preface to this 1971 book, “women are an oppressed people, we can learn about this oppression by using the ‘politics of experience,’ we can combat oppression by attacking the agents and institutions of power… to produce either ‘equality’ or the ‘liberated self’: ‘whole people.’ We have… to discuss the specific features of woman’s situation that most clearly locate her oppression… The family and the psychology of femininity are clearly crucial here… it is within the development of her feminine psyche and her ideological and socio-economic role as mother and housekeeper that woman finds the oppression that is hers alone. As this defines her, so any movement for her liberation must analyze and change this position.” (Pg. 14)

She says in the first chapter, “the ‘middle class’ composition of Women’s Liberation is not an unhappy fact… but an intrinsic fact of feminist awareness. The most economically and socially underprivileged woman is bound much tighter to her condition by a consensus which passes it off as ‘natural.’… a college-educated girl spending her time studying ‘home economics’ for an academic degree is at least in a position to ask ‘why?” (Pg. 22)

She asserts, “The ideological dimensions of the revolution are likely to come initially from within the ideologically dominant class. Clearly nothing will be achieved within this sphere alone… In a consumer society the role of ideology is so important that it is within the sphere of ideology that the oppressions of the whole system sometimes manifest themselves most apparently. It is here that middle-class radicalism has its place. This should not mislead us into thinking that attacking the institutions and agents of the superstructure is a middle-class occupation and that, say, students must just ally with workers who will bring in the economic struggle… the role of OPPRESSED groups, that is those groups which experience their oppression as much culturally as economically, is increasingly important. Women are an oppressed half of the population.” (Pg. 34-35)

She explains, “for most of this book I have used the term ‘feminist’ and ‘liberationist’ interchangeably and refer to the whole movement as the Women’s Liberation Movement. Briefly, liberationists see the oppression of women as one … of the many oppressions experienced by different people in pre-socialist societies; radical feminists contend it is the major and primary one in all societies.” (Pg. 51)

She clarifies, “The separatist politics of Women’s Liberation may have come out of one of the chief manifestations of women’s oppression.: their diffidence… Women’s Liberation both counteracts the oppressed behavior of women in our society … and provides a political base for the analysis of this oppression. Such a separatist movement in no way excludes the awareness of other oppressed groups under capitalism, nor does it pretend that the society does not harm men, too. The movement is largely anti-capitalist…” (Pg. 58)

She points out, “Women’s Liberation is crucially concerned with that area of politics which is experienced as personal. Women… find that what they thought was an individual dilemma is a social predicament and hence a political problem… In this way a personal incident that was condemned to the oblivion of privacy is examined as a manifestation of the oppressed conditions women experience: the personal is seen to be a crucial aspect of the political.” (Pg. 61)

She argues, “Feminism unites women at the level of their total oppression---it is all-inclusive… Its politics match this: it is a total attack. The theory backs this: the first division of labor was the first formation of oppressor and oppressed---the first division of labor was between man and woman. The first domination must be given priority---it must be the first to go.” (Pg. 87)

She admits, “The oppressed consciousness of all groups contributes to the nature of this socialist ideology---if any oppressed awareness is missing from its formation that is its loss. Feminist consciousness has been inadequately represented in the formation of socialist ideology, as the oppression of women has, so far, been inadequately combatted in socialist revolutions.” (Pg. 96)

She suggests, “the attempt to focus women’s existence exclusively on bringing up children, is manifestly harmful to children as well… Exclusive maternity is often… ‘counter-productive.’ The mother discharges her own frustrations and anxieties in a fixation on a child. An increased awareness of the critical importance of socialization, far from leading to a restitution of classical maternal roles, should lead to a reconsideration of them---of what makes a good socializing agent who can genuinely provide security and stability for the child.” (Pg. 146)

She concludes, “In the home the social function and the psychic identity of women as a group is found. Class differences at work… are here obliterated for status differences: ‘wealthy,’ ‘middling,’ ‘poor.’ This is not to underestimate these. But the position of women as women takes precedence; oppressed whatever their particular circumstances. Hence the importance of feminist consciousness in any revolution… Hence Women’s Liberation.” (Pg. 182)

The book's great commercial success was considerably aided by its publication coinciding with the start of his three-month tour of the United States in the Spirit on behalf of the Daniel Guggenheim Fund for the Promotion of Aeronautics. The nation became obsessed with Lindbergh during the tour in which he was seen in person by more than 30 million Americans, a quarter of the nation's then population. No other author before or since ever had such an extensive, highly publicized tour that helped promote a book than did Lindbergh's "We" of himself and the Spirit during their 22,350-mile tour of the US. He visited 82 cities in all 48 states during which the nation's nascent aviation superhero delivered 147 speeches and rode 1,290 miles in parades.

Charles Augustus Lindbergh was born in Detroit Michigan on February 4, 1902. He died on the Hawaiian Island of Maui on August 26, 1974. The author of the foreword, Myron T. Herrick, was born on October 9, 1854 in Huntington Ohio and died on March 31, 1929 in Paris France where he was serving as US Ambassador. Fitzhugh Green, Senior, an Arctic Explorer who wrote the afterward, was born in St. Joseph Missouri on August 16, 1888 and died on December 2, 1947 in Danbury, Connecticut.
