Getting Lucky Number Seven is my favorite kind of new adult contemporary romance. I love the flirty nature of the friends to something more trope, I love the URST, I love nerdy humor, and I love a good college bucket list. So I knew this book was meant to be for me. And I loved it just as much as I was expecting to. It was such a fun read. I was so sure that I would love this book that I signed up for two blogs tours for it by accident. Opps. Sometimes I get a little overly excited for a book. But I was happy that I did for Getting Lucky Number Seven. I loved cute and adorable awkward science nerd Lyla. And I beyond loved her friendship with hot and smart hockey/science guy Beck. It was a winning formula for me.

Lyla is an awesome girl, but she feels a little invisible to guys. When her roommate set her up on a group date at the start of the book and she overheard those mean comments, something inside of me broke a little for her. She didn’t deserve that at all. So I don’t blame her for wanting to try some new things. So she created her college bucket list. I don’t feel like she was changing herself for a guy because she was still the same girl. She changed her clothes, but as she pointed out, she wasn’t even sure that what she was wearing before was her style. She just wore it to hide. Lyla is a strong girl, and I don’t think she would do anything that she didn’t want to do for herself. I loved her journey of self discovery. And of course, I loved her interactions with Beck.

Beck is an awesome friend. Lyla was his lab partner, and since then they have developed a completely platonic sunday movie night tradition. Beck is a solidly great guy. He drops everything for Lyla- always. And watching him squirm while she checked off items on her bucket list had me giggling. They are just too cute. Don’t worry, there are roadblocks, and character discoveries and development that make Getting Lucky Number Seven more than just a fluff read. Beck’s family situation is very tough, in a non-conventional way. I think Getting Lucky Number Seven has something for everyone.

If you like romance or romantic comedy books at all, Getting Lucky Number Seven is a must read for you.

Best NA title I have read recently

This is honestly the best book I have read in the New Adult genre recently. Beck is a hockey player, and a "player" all around honestly. He has all the recent NA romance cliches going on - athletic, handsome, smart, wealthy, manwhore. Lyla is a chemistry major, geeky. They become friends when they took a class together and were matched as lab partners, but friends is all they are at the start of the book. There aren't hidden feelings - Beck thinks of her as a friend and that is completely it, not noticing her past that. She gave up on the idea a while back, and had a different boyfriend when they initially met.

The book opens with Lyla being insulted regarding her looks and personality, and hence she decides she is going to change that. She creates a bucket list of things she wants to accomplish in college aside from the academics that have always been her focus. Her good friend Beck is recruited in her efforts to check them off. The setup is a bit cliche too honestly, but how this author writes it and lets it develop is not cliche at all, and that makes all the difference.

The romance is very very slow to develop. There is not insta-love here. They are friends who very very slowly move towards more with some falters and mishaps along the way. I like that the author didn't make it happen too easily, and what is accomplished reads very realistically, true to the age of these characters. There is some side drama of the families, but it too is well done and realistic. The heat between these two is there but does not overwhelm the rest of the story. I really loved the slow sweet romance of these two and would definitely look into reading more by this author.

Pucking Perfect!

I am a big fan of friends to lovers trope....it's like my own personal form of catnip. I can't get enough of them! This book also appealed to me because it's not only a friends to lovers story line, but it also has ugly duckling twist, which I also love.

Lyla is a nerd. She's smart. Quiet. Shy. Awkward around other people, especially men. She dresses kind of hippy-ish and is not your typical college student. Beck is a jock. He's smart. Outgoing. A big sweetheart and basically your typical college student. They were paired up in a chemistry lab and became fast friends.

When Lyla comes up with her college bucket list Beck is more than willing to help her out. At first the list is very innocent: get a new look, do a keg stand, sing karaoke, kiss a stranger, get a tattoo...things Lyla thinks that all college students should do. But the last item changes EVERYTHING: Have mind-blowing sex.

Since Beck agreed to help Lyla with her list, the two fall into a friends with benefits situation. What he doesn't expect is to fall for her. But unfortunately for Lyla, Beck has a chip on his shoulder regarding relationships and when he learns something about his father's past, he knows that he can't be the man Lyla deserves.

I just love Lyla and Beck as a couple. They complement each other perfectly. They are super comfortable with each other and have such a great friendship. They tell each other corny science jokes and send each other funny cat photos like friends do and also have that "mind-blowing sex" that Lyla wanted to have.

Very boring and drawn out

Book for class. Very boring and drawn out. I feel as if there is a lot of filler in this book. The authors could have gotten their points across in about half the book.

Designing Conflict Management Systes, Costantino & Merchant

This was a comprehensive, practical-theoretical look at designing dispute resolution systems in business and governmental organisations.

I found it a practical as well as informative book, which will continue to be a handy reference for those doing dispute systems design.

The authors take Ury, Brett & Goldberg's earlier book: Getting Disputes Resolved: Designing Systems to Cut the Cost of Conflict, Jossey-Bass, CA, 1988, into the new areas of application, addressing new issues which adds informative review and new techniques to that original text in DSD.

Costantino and Merchant include sections on:
The Designer as Role Model, Traps and Pitfalls for Designers,and
Organizational Assessment - looking at the big picture in a thorough manner before offering any suggestions.

The book is arranged in 3 sections: Coping with Conflict in Organizations,
Designing and Improving Conflict Management Systems, and Making the System Work. I particularly liked their metaphors, such as "the dark side of Dispute Systems Design", and "Resistance and constraints: having tea with your demons". Indeed a refreshing and welcome addition in the field.

An invaluable resource for OD, HR and conflict mgt pros.

This book contributes mightily to defining how the emerging field of conflict management differs from organizational development, and what they share in common. For this alone it is worth the cover price.

But the authors don't stop there. The book is full of practical strategies for developing conflict management systems. And its techniques reflect real world experience, not just theory!

But, as a practitioner in this field, I can't say enough thanks to Constantino and Merchant for deepening the exploration of this very important new field!

About the Author
Dr. Roberta Alexander is Professor Emeritus at San Diego City College. She has taught Reading, Composition, Literature, Chicano Studies, and Black Studies as well as English as a Second Language courses for the San Diego Community College District since 1974. Formerly the Department Chair of English, Chair of Chairs, and Academic Senate President, she now focuses on teaching and writing. She is the author of a series of college reading textbooks. Dr. Alexander earned her BA in Spanish Literature from University of California, Berkeley and her PhD in Comparative Literature from University of California, San Diego.

Jan Jarrell is the ESOL coordinator at San Diego City College. She has taught English as a Second Language, Reading, and Composition courses in both the credit and noncredit divisions of the San Diego City College District since 1989. She has held a number of leadership positions including Department Chair and Interim Associate Dean in the noncredit division, and Basic Skills Coordinator.

Wrong text book

I ordered this text book for my daughter and received the instructors edition which contains all the answers.....she can not bring this book to class fearing that her professor will think she is cheating.....I've emailed the seller and asked for the student edition to be sent to me. I am waiting for a reply

Excellent Text For College

A Community of Readers - A Thematic Approach To Reading by
Roberta Alexander and Jan Jarrell is an excellent book which
covers the dynamics of critical reading for college. The authors
describe reading as a process which consists of reflection, the
need to know or discriminate, the use of a dictionary, main ideas,
evidence, inferences and plenty of exercises demonstrating critical
thinking.

The authors provide a very extensive tool kit which includes visual
aids, how to take class notes, test taking, writing tips, navigating
websites, reading circles of students and sample book projects.
This section is extremely valuable because it deals with facilitating
learning transfer for college students. This version does not have an
answer key although there is an instructor's manual available from
the publisher as there is with most texts.

The authors present a very extensive section on how to use a
dictionary. In addition, the text points out the necessity of
utilizing the glossary for texts frequently. There is an area
which is not emphasized by the authors. That is, English literature
often contains advanced vocabulary not listed in the back of the
book. In those instances, students must refer back and forth to a
standard dictionary.

The easy way around this is to peruse the book, extract the advanced
vocabulary and research meanings in the dictionary prior to actually
reading the book. These steps will assist in enhancing your vocabulary.
Too often, students just gloss over unknown words and lose the meaning
intended by the author. In addition, students should research all unfamiliar
vocabulary as preparation for exams like the SAT, GRE and entrance exams
in professions like law or medicine.

The authors provide at least six pages of suggested readings, as well
as illustrative websites . The suggested readings are aimed at developing
skills for potential student projects and other advanced work in college.
In addition, the authors provide a considerable section on applying what
you read in small group discussions and forums.

A Community of Readers - A Thematic Approach To Reading by Roberta
Alexander and Jan Jarrell is an important work for developing reading
skills with a view toward college applications in a variety of
important settings.This work can be helpful because department
chairpeople are getting away from course grades based solely on
examinations. Currently, there is a move toward having students develop
work products which reflect critical analysis, class participation,
field work, small group participation and extensive data analysis
for subjects like econometrics.

Generally, publishers do not sell instructor manuals to students. An
instructor's manual has the words "Instructor's Manual" in bold print
on the face. If a book does not have this insignia on the face, it's
intended for students. In addition, teachers provide the ISBN number
which is the governing disclosure on the book they intend to use.
Lastly, the publisher has just come out with the 6th Edition. Very
often, publishers do make minor changes to books even within the same
addition to take into consideration comments by buyers.

The biography of a remarkable individual and the chronicle of a family's rise from slavery to winning the American dream.

From Slave Ship to Harvard is the true story of an African American family in Maryland over six generations. The author has reconstructed a unique narrative of black struggle and achievement from paintings, photographs, books, diaries, court records, legal documents, and oral histories. From Slave Ship to Harvard traces the family from the colonial period and the American Revolution through the Civil War to Harvard and finally today.

Yarrow Mamout, the first of the family in America, was an educated Muslim from Guinea. He was brought to Maryland on the slave ship Elijah and gained his freedom forty-four years later. By then, Yarrow had become so well known in the Georgetown section of Washington, D.C., that he attracted the attention of the eminent American portrait painter Charles Willson Peale, who captured Yarrow's visage in the painting that appears on the cover of this book. The author here reveals that Yarrow's immediate relatives-his sister, niece, wife, and son-were notable in their own right. His son married into the neighboring Turner family, and the farm community in western Maryland called Yarrowsburg was named for Yarrow Mamout's daughter-in-law, Mary "Polly" Turner Yarrow. The Turner line ultimately produced Robert Turner Ford, who graduated from Harvard University in 1927.

Just as Peale painted the portrait of Yarrow, James H. Johnston's new book puts a face on slavery and paints the history of race in Maryland. It is a different picture from what most of us imagine. Relationships between blacks and whites were far more complex, and the races more dependent on each other. Fortunately, as this one family's experience shows, individuals of both races repeatedly stepped forward to lessen divisions and to move America toward the diverse society of today.

An Astonishing Story

With clear writing and impressive detail, James H. Johnston provides his readers with the truly remarkable saga of Yarrow Mamout, the African who arrived in the English colonies in 1752, spent over four decades as a slave, and lived on in Georgetown (now part of Washington, D.C). As others have noted, there are two compelling reasons why one should read this book: the incredible life that Yarrow lived, from beginning to end; and, secondly, the masterful way that the author researched and narrated the book. Johnston is as careful and meticulous a historian of what he has uncovered as anyone would ever want to have the pleasure of reading. In his hands, Yarrow and the world that he was forced into by slavery comes alive in all respects. For any reader interested in seeing through contemporary Washington, D.C. and the broader geographic area into the early 19th century, i.e. life on Dent Place, N.W. Washington then and now as an example, this is the book. It will transport you back into an earlier time in a way you could never imagine.

A Revelation of Lives Well Lived

This book is a revelation of lives well lived. Two Hundred and Sixty Years ago (June 4, 1752) Yarrow Mamout arrived at the port of Annapolis Maryland and began a life in a new land. 260 years later sitting in my living room I was able to read the remarkable story of Yarrow Maout's life and the lives of his descendants. I use the word remarkable because to have had his portrait painted twice was itself remarkable but to now have his story and that of his family told in such detail and with such love just adds to the remarkableness that began in June 1752.

I know that James Johnston was amazed at the portrait that was painted by James Simpson in 1822 and is in the Peabody Room of the Georgetown Library. I have a gut feeling that Yarrow Mamout looked out at Mr. Johnston and was saying, "please tell my story" and what a story that needs to be heard by many of us today in 2012.

On reflection I have to say that one thing amazed me was that Yarrow Mamout remained a faithful Muslim all his life. He practiced his faith faithfully and even when Mr. Johnston and Nancy Kassner, then archaeologist of the District of Columbia, looked for his grave they looked in the place where Yarrow Mamout would have gone to pray, the south east corner facing Mecca. His faithfulnes to his faith must have been a remarkable witness to the Beall family as well as all who knew him and should be a witness to all of us.

If all of us could have some small degree of the spirit that Yarrow Mamout had we would be far better for it.

Outstanding!

I first ran across reference to this book more than a year ago but only recently (finally) bought it. I read it in two evenings. While the subject matter interests me both from the historical and local aspects, the easy reading style of James Johnston's writing made it a joy to read. Genealogy can be an exceedingly dry subject when it's someone else's family your reading about, but the explanations of relationships, historically correct practices and documentary evidence and the way he ties things together from previous chapters make it read very much like a mystery being unraveled (which it is!), than a genealogical text. Well done Mr. Johnston. Well done indeed!

I have read brochures longer than this book.

I was looking for a book on the use of Roslyn. I did not notice before pre-ordering that this book is listed as 105 pages long. The introduction to Roslyn starts at page 35. The figures are gigantic (I'm guessing because Apress won't publish a book under 100 pages). It reads like a blog post. At this price I am upset.
