Loved it!

A book with BDSM, pirates and an adventure, how could I resist this?

I've seen this book placed in some retailers as erotic, but I think calling it that does it a disservice. This book is much more than erotica, and while sex does feature heavily, it is more about the relationships and emotional aspects than the physical ones.

Jon is an empath and lives in a run down castle with his stepfather, Reginald, head of the castle guards. Reginald uses Jon's skills on the prisoners in the dungeons to decide who is guilty or innocent. His skills reach the ear of a pirate captain, who decides Jon might just be what he's looking for to keep him one step ahead of the other pirates. For who would try to cheat him if they knew Jon could tell they were lying?

Investigating a murder at the town's brothel, Jon is kidnapped by the pirates and brought on board. Jon doesn't know it, but the reader does, Jon has little choice. Either he joins the pirate band or they kill him, simple as that. It would have been a short book if our hero was murdered in the first few chapters, so the readers can almost guess he'll pick joining the pirates.

I loved this book and I loved Jon. He was an innocent virgin before he joined Captain Baltsaros and his crew, and his confusion over feeling these things for a man was well done, without the book being completely unrealistic. But hey, I'm reading about fantasy pirates, I'm not really worried about realism here :)

As for Baltsaros, for a lot of the book he wasn't a particlularly nice character, but he was a compelling one and I could see how Jon could be drawn to him despite his misgivings at first. Throw in Tom, the jealous first mate and you have the start of an intriguing love triangle and eventual threesome, which I'm not usually a fan off, but it works well for these characters.

All the characters were well-rounded and I adored Katherine, the only woman on the ship who became a sort of older sister to Jon.

Watching Jon blossom from shy virgin into a young man comfortable in his sexuality was wonderful, you almost got to take the journey with him. There is some BDSM in the book, but the scenes are more than just kinky sex, they develop the emotional connection between the characters and the reader gets to see Jon experience sub-space, which a lot of BDSM book just don't do at all or gloss over it. The love scenes are very well-writen (as is the whole book), very sensual and emotionally charged, they sizzle.

There is a good balance of sex, action, mystery, intrigue and jealousy and it makes for a very satisfying read.

If you like your pirates for what they are - rough men who think nothing about murder, kidnapping, stealing, then this might be the book for you. They are also very sexy in here, despite the moral hinterlands they inhabit. A fantastic, sexy read.

Rich and intriguing - Huzzah!

I read this on a flight from DC to Phoenix. I was completely absorbed in it. The characters were rich, mysterious, fallible, and real. No shying away from a bit of controversy and some kinks not perhaps held by all. While this book has BDSM it is not about it at all. No BDSM 101 here. It's all about personalities and circumstances and what happens when you discover what you thought is not what is. There is evil here - and it comes from places perhaps you won't expect. There is redemption of a sorts - there is great drama that hooks you in and just propels you forward. It's not a romance - but it sorta is. I think that's what so cool about it. You delve deep here - in what things people are capable of but it's not overly gritty. Matter of factual more.

It's a great length - bit of swashbuckling and even great female characters who get some "screen time". I'm not usually much for historicals but this is a very meaty book with a lot going on. The writing really shines - very smooth, great structure, and the erotic parts are erotic but this is not even close to too much sex not enough action. There is plenty of both here to satisfy anyone.

Deliciously Erotic & Wonderfully Engaging

I have to say that right from the start "Caged: Love and Treachery on the High Seas" caught my attention with its vivid storytelling, sucking me into the complicated love story that Jon finds himself living as he is caught between two men and the dangerous life that pulls them all together. The story is lush, seductive, erotic, exciting, emotionally charged and incredibly well written. It has a sharp and provocative tone that just makes you feel as if you're taking the journey right alongside Jon as he is twisted, turned and tumbled... in the middle of an epic struggle for love, for possession, for lust and for power. The writing is fast-paced and vibrant with imagery, painting each scene with a fine tipped brush and bringing it to life in a thrilling and alluring way. The novel left me breathless and eager for more, like any good novel should, so I can say with confidence that this was definitely worth the read.

Owen L. Sirrs is a faculty associate in the Defense Critical Language and Culture Program at the University of Montana where he specializes in the Middle East and Afghanistan. He previously served as senior intelligence officer on Iran for the US Defense Intelligence Agency.

Impressive and well-researched

Sirrs does an admirable job given the daunting nature of his task - writing a survey of the very secretive Egyptian intelligence community - and does better than might be expected. He makes great use of available material, mining declassified US and UK documents and Egyptian secondary sources. Of necessity this means that the story is told from outside, with much of its focus on Egyptian foreign intelligence. There is little insight into the internal structure, operations or personalities of the Egyptian intelligence agencies, how they work with each other and with other parts of government. Ideally, there could have been some more investigative reporting, interviews with Egyptian sources, and more journalistic legwork, but that is too much to expect from an academic work. Given the recent fall of the State Security Investigations Service, and the leak of many documents, perhaps these insights can now emerge, and will inspire enterprising historians and journalists. If so, this book will be a necessary foundation. Two minor complaints, both not the fault of the author, regarding the price and index. Hopefully a somewhat cheaper paperback edition will be available, as with Sirr's other excellent book on Nasser's missile program. The index is a bit frustrating (personal names starting with "al" are all alphabetized under A for example), and most, but not all, Egyptian organizations are alphabetized under "Egyptian."

This long overdue book provides a concise and accessible summary of a very relevent and current but nonetheless neglected topic. Drawing from a wide range of sources it addresses Egypts successes and failures in both domestic and foreign intelligence from the days of British occupation to the present and lays the foundation for an assessment of what may happen as Egypt nears the post-Mubarak era. Written in a straight forward style suitable for both the specialist and the general reader, this book is likely to be the definitive work on the Egyptian intelligence service for some time to come.

Also presented are such evocative materials as a map for gold miners in the time of Seti I, photographs of tool marks left by ancient quarry workers, mason's guidelines on a column in the Great Hall at Karnak, a scene of workmen polishing a sphinx and other small details that bridge the centuries and remind us that flesh-and-blood human beings sweated and toiled to accomplish the marvelous technical feats so well described here.

Oldie but Goodie

Well written but nearly 86 years old. Accurate ,but I'm looking for additional material uncovered in the last 86 years as well.

These men are not pompous...okay maybe a little.

Clarke and Englebach are very well versed in typical accepted means of architecture in Ancient Egypt. Though without color Photos this book has many illustrations which do in some cases help you get a sense of the immensity of some of the projects the ancients undertook. One particularly striking section refers to an unfinished granite obelisk at Aswan. The time involved in such a project is staggaring. They do a good job summing up what the committees on Ancient Egypt have all decided is the norm but advance no further, putting in very few original thoughts. The book is also seventy years old, so many of the unexcavated sites they refer to have now in fact been excavated. The authors go out of their way on several occasions to assure the reader that "pyramid cranks" should be disregarded in all forms. They however fail to explain why. Their persistant knocking of the so called pyramid cranks becomes rather annoying because whenever there is a mystery the authors waste no time in assuring us that these cranks are wrong, even if no one knows who is right, the authors don't even venture theory in many cases. But don't get me wrong, this is a good book and will help anyone get aquainted with how most structures were built and what methods they used for quarrying and so forth. Unfortunately again, whenever there is an unanswered question, Clarke and Englebach seem more ready to spout rhetoric rather than entertain any original thought. I really recommend this book even if I have some complaints because as far as actual documentation of construction, this book does go a long way.

Good Sourcebook and interesting read

A useful sourcebook that enables me to have a character cringe as he looks up at the stone architraves that might (had they but known it millenia ago) break off - stone being less flexible than wood - and fall on his head. Dover has done a good job reissuing older books in facsimile form. This is one that would be better if it could be updated in the light of several decades' discoveries, but it is good as it is.

Not a page-turner, but then it isn't supposed to be.

Expensive worksheets

This is one of the worst "teacher resources" I have encountered. This amounts to nothing more than an expensive collection of worksheets. I understand this is supposed to be college level material but this whole book feels more like a study guide than it does a textbook. This teacher's resource cd solidified the fact this book is poorly made. The worksheets are nothing more than a few problems thrown together as a supplement to the material we are supposed to teach for each section. The amount of material you receive for the cost is simply too disproportionate. I sincerely expected so much more for the cost.

This item received a 3 star rating because the disc adds a little more functionality to the book, which is a whole different issue. I do like that it includes labs for each section in a clear and concise manner. The CD is easy to use, and the materials and resources are separated by chapter and then by section. Works okay for what it is intended, but I simply cannot justify the price. If the price drops, it is worth a purchase, but do not pay full price, there just isn't enough here for what they are charging.

Decent buy...not my type of reading style though...

Don't get me wrong. Drolsbaugh does a great job telling his story of being a part of the Deaf culture and the hearing world. When he felt frustrated, I felt like I was going through it too. He's able to put you in his shoes and recreate his feelings about finding his place. I thought he did a great job with that.

Maybe I'm just not big on the journal-style readings. I felt like Drolsbaugh would start on one topic and then switch over to another really quick and then jump back to his original topic. I found it difficult to follow at times when he moved around a bit. When I journal, I write whatever comes to mind. Whatever I have down is down. I felt like that was what Drolsbaugh had put together, which is great for some readers but not for me. (I have trouble reading Anne Frank's diary even.)

As a hearing person, I found many parts of Drolsbaugh's book to be very sad. I felt like his message was, "The hearing world sucks and they don't understand us - I know this because I live in both worlds." Perhaps I misunderstood Drolsbaugh. I just felt a little bit sad inside while reading his book. I don't like when one of my identities gets clumped together - not sure if that makes any sense. For example, I'm American and I don't like it when I hear comments like, "All Americans are stuck-up and like to bully the rest of the world" because it's not true. Have you MET all Americans? Same with the hearing world. I don't think it sucks living in the hearing world or the Deaf world. Hearing is one of my identities. It makes me who I am too just as much as being Deaf makes Drolsbaugh who HE is. I don't think it's fair to put down one group/population, even if that group is the dominant one. As a person of color, I don't claim that all white people are racist and want to put us down.

Anyway, now I'm just rambling. The book is a pretty good read, but I didn't like the style of writing. It jumped around a lot and it took me a while to finish. Drolsbaugh's journey is quite an amazing one and I'm glad I was able to be a part of it.

A heart-felt story about finding one's identity

Mark Drolsbaugh tells a fascinating true story that demonstrates how a person's minority culture can be almost obliterated with the best of intentions by those in the majority. His story demonstrates that society today still will not believe the needs of a minority group, even when they express their needs in quite understandable words (signs). The beauty of this work, however, is that it is a happy story with no animosity toward those who would have Mark be someone other than who he really is. Mark's revelations about discovering his true culture, his successes which have followed his discovery, and his fulfillment as a Deaf person could be the story of so many other Deaf individuals. This book should be a MUST read for any hearing parent whose child has been identified with a hearing loss. The professional working with children who are Deaf or hard of hearing (especially those with prelingual hearing loss) should read this. It will provide them with a valuable insight into the life of a Deaf or hard of hearing child.

Fairly Good Introductory Text

Schneider obviously knows his stuff and this is a good introductio to VB 2012. However, there are just too many exercises with requirements that are not covered in the text. It makes the learning process a bit frustrating.

Defniitely NOT a book to learn the basics...

I received this textbook via my campus bookstore rather than Amazon, but I have to say this has got to be the worst book for beginners to use to learn this language. While the author is very knowledgeable and he covers some great topics, the general ability to learn is hindered by a lack of explanation and the programming projects at the end of the chapters rarely, if at all, are related to anything covered in the text. Other than terminology, all this book taught me was that Google and Stack Exchange reign supreme.

Thoroughly Simple.

Visual Basic is basic programming, however, don't be fooled, programming is not so basic. This book provides very good accounts of the basics of the language and programming itself.

Although it is all about basics, focus on the principles provided in this book and watch them appear again and again in other languages as you move through this exciting world.

Pros:
Simple, easy to understand with lots of exercises to practice in the book.

Cons:
The MyProgrammingLab feature is a...well, scam. You get access to the online version of the book, but in order to be able to get to the online practice exercises, which are required for my class, you have to purchase yet another key to access them. Thus, if you get the book and need to access only the homework feature, buy this book used and save your $$$.
