Brilliant.

I'm an obsessed horror fan and I read everything I can get my hands on, but oddly enough I don't care for vampire fiction all that much. It's a subject that's been done to death in my opinion and as a rule it kind of bores me. (With some exceptions, of course.) For years, I passed over Martin's FEVRE DREAM, thinking it was just "another vampire novel". But if you are lucky to come across a copy of this novel, don't make the same mistake I did. FEVRE DREAM is far more than just a vampire novel. It is a brilliant novel, period. I was so spellbound by this book, my house could have fallen down around me while I was reading it, and I probably would not have noticed. By the time I turned the last page, it had ranked itself as one of the best novels I have ever read. George R.R. Martin skills as a storyteller are unparalleled. I'm actually jealous of the fantasy and sci fi fans who've had his attention over the years. FEVRE DREAM has all the elements of the great classics of literature: larger than life characters, a perilous journey, and a story that sweeps you away like the river it is set upon... In a nutshell, it is a tale of vampires clashing on a steamboat in the 1850's. Two "bloodmasters", Joshua York and Damon Julian, are on a collision course of ideals and philosophy, and God help all those who are witness to it. The river will run with blood before it is all over... I'll never forget the cast of characters: the cruel and sick Sour Billy, the beloved curmudgeon Cap'n Abner Marsh, Hairy Mike Dunn, Joshua York, or Tobey the cook. I have never used the word "masterpiece" in a book review, but this book merits the term. Highest recommendation. You'll never forget this book once you turn the last page, I guarantee it.

Wonderful!

This unique novel is definitely one of the best I've ever read. It's a completely different take on the legend of vampires. Martin's vampires are not undead humans, but rather the remains of an ancient warrior species similar to, but, in some ways different from, man. His vampires don't sleep in coffins, nor are they vulnerable to things like garlic and holy water. They are, however, light sensitive, and, most importantly of all, they have a thirst for blood. It's the struggle of one of these vampires to lift the curse of that thirst that drives the story. "Fevre Dream", though, isn't really about vampires, it's about the struggle for acceptance, and, most of all, friendship. It's the friendship between the crusading vampire and an old Mississippi riverboat captain named Abner Marsh that is the center of this fast-moving tale. Martin creates a wonderful sense of atmosphere throughout, with his story racing through a background of life on the Mississippi river in the 19th Century. The author keeps us interested throughout with a series of twists and turns that throw our two friends together, tear them apart, then toss them together again as they join the struggle to end the thirst and bring vampires as much into the human world as possible. And, the last few pages are simply some of the most touching prose I've ever read. A super read. If you can get a copy, do so, though I'm certainly not giving up mine. Oh, and I e-mailed the author a few years ago to complement him on this work. I was shocked that he wrote me back and said that he's been considering a sequel to "Fevre Dream". We'll have to wait, though, as he mentioned that he would be tied up with a fantasy series, which turned out to be the excellent "Song Of Fire And Ice." We'll wait, George, and thanks.

A murky myth with Twain twists

I probably first read this book about 16 years ago or so. Picked it up on a whim at the library and it has been on my recommended list ever since(although the publisher seems to have thought otherwise.) I am fascinated with the vampire myth and this novel was the first to make me realize how adaptable the myth was - Anne Rice's often brillant concepts aside. Every thing changes so why not the vampire's legend? Being 1999 I can't remember the specifics , I just remember it was a rousing read that caused me to ignore all my mundane duties at the time and read it straight through. I was greatful that it also made George R.R. Martin a name that I would look for in the future when looking for a good read. My wife and I became fans of the early television episodes of Beauty and the Beast and imagine my surprise when I realized my favorite episodes were penned by George R.R. Martin ( the episodes that dealt with character developement and ambiance, not the ones given to unadulterated trash romance.) I soon made sure I read all that Martin had written and I'm looking forward to the to reading the Clash of Kings follow-up. Fevre Dream is an atmospheric cruise down the nether regions of the Mighty Muddy. I also want to thank Amazon for the chance to expound on an out of print novel. Service and appreciation of the medium, whether it be print or audio is a commendable trait seldom found in today's retail world.

Pretty useful

This book should be purchased (or borrowed) by people who already have some basic founding skills in drawing wildlife, or life in general. It does start you out with circles, cones and boxes, but it then jumps straight to detail. So, if you're not that far yet in the process, don't buy this, or you won't learn anything from it, for it is the next stage in developing your talent!

The instructions are somewhat limited, but again, the book assumes you're already learned in the drawing process.

The illustrations are nice, starting with bone and muscle structure, which teaches you where hollows and points are underneath all that fur and that fluffy animals are not just a big pile of it. They are also simple enough to make you feel like you are on the same level, without overwhelming you with tiny details and "I could never draw that" illustrations that you find in some books.

The information given about each particular species and families of animals are keen and teach you how they would behave naturally (very good information for drawing action poses!). It also advises to go to parks and zoos to observe your subject, to get a feel of how they move and act. The author also encourages the artist to "let loose" once in a while and add some style and flair to their drawings (think Disney animals!).

Overall, a very good piece of learning material that I think most young artists should have within their reach (I am 20).

An excellent guide to drawing AND nature

J.C. Amberlyn is a fine wildlife artist whom I have been watching evolve for almost 10 years, both for her nature art and her cartoon characters (love you, Space Chicken and Space Weasel!). This book does not tell you the magic secret of J.C. Amberlyn's incredibly lifelike animal art--that spark that animates each and every one of her drawings, no matter if it's unfinished or not. But it's the closest she can come, and she shares her unique artistic viewpoint and her 20+ years of wildlife studies with you with no holds barred. I understand that the publishers cut out a lot of her discourse on each animal's habits--too bad, because that was as entertaining as the drawing lessons in the preview edition I read some months ago. A second book, please, with the edited materials and more? But I digress.

I am not an artist. I have trouble with stick figures. However, "Drawing Wildlife" gave even me some hope that with a little (lot!) of practice, I can draw something that someone besides my husband will recognize. My first bear (p.86) was actually overtly bear-esque, in fact. My daughter, who draws well, did even better, and my mother, who draws even better than my daughter, produced a wonderful bear on her first try from Amberlyn's directions.

Amberlyn uses traditional art teaching methods such as uniting shapes with lines to form a coherent whole--except, when she's doing it, that cougar that consists of 1 circle, 4 lines, 2 rectangles, one triangle and 3 ellipses already has an animated, lifelike pose. As I said, magic! (See page 54). Also, I don't know how she does it, but no matter how unfinished the drawing around them, the eyes she produces stare at you right from the page (pp 22, 34). That's the wonder of J.C. Amberlyn, and although I can't make it happen yet, as I said--this book gives me hope!

I can't recommend it highly enough for those who actually can draw. I think you'll see your own magic flow from your pencil in very short order. Way to go, J.C. Amberlyn!

More expensive version of Jack Hamm

The book is all right. I learned a few extra things that I didn't learn from Jack Hamm's How to Draw Animals. But I kept feeling like I was reading Hamm's book a lot. If you don't have a lot of money, Hamm's book will give you just as much for almost half the price.

And both books should really be called How to Draw Mammals. There's nothing about reptiles, birds, or fish in them.

About the Author

W. Richard (Dick) Scott received his PhD from the University of Chicago and is currently Professor Emeritus in the Department of Sociology with courtesy appointments in the Graduate School of Business, Graduate School of Education, and School of Medicine at Stanford University. He has spent his entire professional career at Stanford, serving as chair of the Sociology Department (1972–1975), as director of the Training Program on Organizations and Mental Health (1972–1989), and as director of the Stanford Center for Organizations Research (1988–1996).

Scott is an organizational sociologist who has concentrated his work on the study of professional organizations, including educa�tional, engineering, medical, research, social welfare, and nonprofit advocacy organizations. During the past three decades, he has concen�trated his writing and research on the relation between organizations and their institutional environments. He is the author or editor of about a dozen books and more than 200 articles and book chapters.

He was elected to membership in the Institute of Medicine (1975), served as editor of the Annual Review of Sociology (1987–1991), and as president of the Sociological Research Association (2006–2007). Scott was the recipient of the Distinguished Scholar Award from the Management and Organization Theory Division of the Academy of Management in 1988, the Distinguished Educator Award from the same Division in 2013, and of the Richard D. Irwin Award for Distinguished Scholarly Contributions to Management from the Academy of Management in 1996. In 2000, the Section on Organization, Occupations and Work of the American Sociological Association created the W. Richard Scott Award to annually recognize an outstanding article-length contribution to the field. He has received honorary doctorates from the Copenhagen School of Business (2000), the Helsinki School of Economics and Business (2001), and Aarhus University in Denmark (2010).

Good overview of institutionalism and organizational analysis. Missing is critical realism and its impact on institution theory. Lancaster style discourse theory has a lot to offer this field, and it wish it were engaged in this book. But I'll use this book for my institution theory graduate class.

A Wonderful Guide

Craig Sensei has done a wonderful job with this treatise that remains the foremost primer on Iado. I would recommend this book for anyone interested in Iado, Kenjutsu or Japanese culture in general. It has been quite a long time since I first read this book and having recently picked it up again I felt compelled to post a review and state that it is still at the forefront.

Iai: The Drawing of the Sword is an excellent

work documenting a little known style of

japanese swordsmanship called iai-do, or,

"The Way of the drawing of the sword".

This style of martial art centers on the act

of drawing one's sword as quickly and

efficiently as possible. A person well adept

at it is capable of tossing a fruit into the

air, stepping back, drawing his weapon,

slicing the fruit and resheathing before the

orange halves can hit the ground. It is a

deadly poetry of motion to behold.

Mr.Craig continues to teach this and other

traditional martial arts at his Dojo in

Houston, Texas. He attained the title of

Shi-han or "Master Teacher" in 1973. This

title is rarely given to westerners. I've

visited and talked with Mr. Craig and must

say he is an honorable man and a competent

sensei.

Iai: The Art of Drawing the Sword is good as a refresher, at best. Craig opens his tome with some personal history and stories, which is a fine method of doing things, until he brings his own opinion into it. He gives the impression that spiritualism should account for most everything in iaido; as most practitioners are aware, spiritualism is only one aspect, and technique is equally or more important.
Throughout the book, Craig provides small interludes detailing Japanese history, and other information, some of which is accurate, some of which is very much exaggerated, and some of which is not true. While the thought was nice, he should have researched his facts more.
The drawings accompanying his descriptions of the kata are sketchy and vague; a beginner would have difficulty following them, although someone with grounding in another Japanese sword art such as kenjitsu may have better luck. However, with knowledge of the kata, or at least of the mechanics of the motions, a reader would find this book a helpful reminder, as long as he does not try to base his study entirely on this book.
Overall, this is not a terrible book, but there are much better on the subject, with regards to technique, illustration, and history.

great book for homeschooling

I have been homeschooling my daughter since her first grade. I have tried a lot of materials, but they are expensive and not so efficient. I really like this book. It contains all the topics covered by fifth grade math, such as algebra, capacity, fractions, length, money, number, operations, patterns, positions, shapes, temperature, time and weight. It also has instructions which advise parents on how to teach each math concept. What's more, this book is affordable. You can see the same kind of quality content that you expect in expensive books, but at a price anyone can afford. My daughter loves the tricks and voluntarily makes up her own problems to solve. She's already seeing how the techniques help her in her normal math work. In the Beestar online math tests (a nice web site beestar.org), she is ranked high in the honor roll. I give credit to this book. Highly recommend!

Not for fith grade math--maybe first or second grade

This book is not fifth grade math. My daughter did much of this math in first grade. We will keep it for my five year old-who can already answer some of the questions. There are a few sections that could be helpful, but they are very small. And my daughter isn't in advanced math, she tests average in her school.

After a couple of reads through I started to practice some of the exercises and immediately felt the benefits. Really Neat and Effective

I was amazed and surprised when I read the material in this book because it matches so well with what I know about acupuncture and other forms of energy healing. I have been receiving acupuncture weekly for several decades and know quite a lot about it. Well, it turns out that tapping using the same sort of underlying methodology. The neat thing about tapping is that it is much simpler to use than acupuncture, and you don't have to worry if you are fearful of needles. Also, this book presents a great methodology for tapping, offering a program for the biggest skeptic to the most open-minded believer. You can feel the results right away. I tried several of the suggested programs and my self-assessment number changed surprisingly quickly. It's really neat. There is also a great FAQs section at the back that answers most questions that you'll have when you finish reading through the programs for different issues such as weight loss, insomnia, creativity, and more. Well written, well researched, and put together in an easy-to-use format. Highly recommended for those interested in self-healing and self development!

Definitely for beginners

Very easy to read, very easy to follow. The title is correct: this book is definitely for beginners. There are three scripts for each category you may want to begin tapping on, but only about a dozen categories. One diagram to show the tapping points, otherwise no pictures. It's effective, but if you're a visual learner, Gala Darling's quick 5-minute video on YouTube would be a great choice for you.

Sorry but I just don't "get" it

OK, I've been introduced to EFT before and maybe I'm just one of those folks that feels to self-conscious to actually give it a go. For some reason it makes me feel VERY silly and I'm constantly overthinking it so it just doesn't work for me. I DO know that it works for others so if you're interested in learning more about it this book does quite a good job of explaining it.
