On the basis of recent developments in scholarly literature concerning the Greek verbal aspect, this study argues that the perfect verbs in Mark 1.15 denote an ongoing dynamic of time fulfilment, closely tied to the ultimate restoration of Israel. This begins with the appearance of Jesus during the days of John the Baptist and is mapped onto two phases of the horizon of Jesus' view of time. Palu concludes that the biblical notion of time is to be tied intimately to the hope of the restoration of Israel, ultimately manifested as the establishment of the Kingdom of God.

There are few things in life as comforting as soup, and it always feels good to ladle soup into a bowl for someone... One thing that amazes me about soup is that it is absolutely brimming with essential vitamins and minerals. Soup is a delicious meal that will make you feel great—eating well is one of the greatest pleasures you can give yourself.

It's ok!

The best thing about this recipe book is how healthy and reasonable the recipes are. My husband gave this book to me for Christmas, and I decided to try out every single recipe in the book (a la Julie and Julia). About ten months in and I've made in the neighborhood of about 20 soups. Favorites are the Arfican Chicken and Peanut Soup (which is truly a meal in its own right), Broccoli with Cheese soup and Carrot Ginger soup. My husband absolutely loved the Stracciatella, and I've also had some rave reviews of my Curried Cauliflower. However, I do have to report that I've been disappointed with a number of the soups I've made from this book due to plain and simple lack of flavor development. The fact is that most of the recipes call for softening onions, adding the balance of ingredients with stock and letting it boil for a while-- this is even true for the French Onion recipe, which seriously undermined the credibility of the author to me. For most recipes, I end up adding about twice the amount of seasonings called for (and usually some of my own), otherwise I would describe them as pretty bland. All the same, I'll continue to cook through this book, and I have found a few real winners that I will definitely make again and again and again.

Always good to have more soup recipes!

The recipes in this book are deliciously easy to make. My husband and I eat a lot of soup because it's easy to make and is packed full of vegetables. I make one pot on Sunday and we have left overs for lunch in the week. This and the counterpart, For the Love of Salad, are two must haves for any cook. I also like the Moosewood cookbooks. I find that my family eats more vegetables when I mix it up.

This will become a favorite of yours (or a great gift to give)

Simple and wholesome are the two words I'd use to best describe this lovely national bestseller. You know how you buy a cookbook and often the ingredients are not typical things in your fridge or pantry? Or the steps seem really complicated? Even worse yet, you like only a few of the recipes throughout the entire book? You won't have that experience with this wonderful addition to your kitchen. Some of the lovely recipes you'll find here:
*Bean & Barley
*Butternut Squash & Apple
*Golden Vegetable
*Roasted Celery Root (to die for)
*Chunky Lentil

There is nothing wild or exotic here and I say that lovingly. The only downside for me personally is the section on poultry & meat soups, but some can be amended to accomodate a vegetarian diet. Further, many of the veggie soups can be amended to vegan by swapping out the butter for Earth Balance or olive oil as well. There is even a section on creating your own stock. It quite literally is one of my favorite cookbooks and I wish I found it sooner!

I have purchased a total of four copies of this book now because it makes such a wonderful gift. I put it in a gift basket with a fresh herb (or herb growing kit) and soup crocks.

If you need a good comfort food, this really is a must-have. If you are reading this in the midst of warm weather, don't worry! There is even a section on cold soups. When summer hits, Chilled Strawberry Soup you are mine.

    HARRISON H. BARRETT received a BS in physics from Virginia Polytechnic Institute, an MS in Physics from MIT, and a PhD in applied physics from Harvard. Dr. Barrett is a professor in the Optical Sciences Center, the Department of Radiology, and the Program in Applied Mathematics and serves as Director of the Center for Gamma-ray Imaging. The holder of twenty-three U.S. patents, he is the recipient of the IEEE Medical Imaging Scientist Award and a Humboldt Prize and the coauthor, with William Swindell, of "Radiological Imaging: The Theory of Image Formation, Detection, and Processing,"

    KYLE J. MYERS received a BS in Mathematics and Physics from Occidental College and an MS and PhD in Optical Sciences from the University of Arizona. Dr. Myers is the Chief of the Medical Imaging and Computer Applications Branch of the Center for Devices and Radiological Health of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. She is a member of the SPIE, the Optical Society of America, and the Medical Image Perception Society (MIPS), and recently served as cochair of the Medical Image Perception Conference sponsored by MIPS.

    I bought this book way back in 1978 when it first came out..No,VCR's No DVD's ..If you were lucky you came across a book like this!I still have it at my parent's house..It is a GREAT book..Learned to play "Julius Finkbine's Rag"( Beaumont Rag) out of it..Sheik of Araby, Soldier's Joy, most of the stuff Clarence did with the Kentucky Colonels..he had only been dead 5 years when this book was published...now he has been dead 36..WOW!..Great, Great, book..at least it was for me.. Clarence was my favorite as a kid..over 30 years later he still is...

    This is a difficult one to track down but worth the effort. Barenberg is able to dissect White's licks in an intellible manner and is for the most part very accurate - amazing since there was very little video or audio reference material available in the late 70's. It comes up on ebay from time to time +/-$100 but worth it as an instructional tool and a collector's item.

By interspersing how-to information and reference tables with brief quizzes and exercises, the authors of Unix Made Easy make it more likely that readers will retain information. System administrators might want to think about giving or loaning this book to all Unix newbies under their care.

    The guide opens with a quick tour of Unix that includes logging in, exploring directory structures, creating files, and other basic jobs. Then, the authors explain vi using conceptual drawings that are superior for a computer book. Unfortunately, Unix Made Easydoesn't cover other editors as well, although it provides plenty of details on and excellent conceptual drawings of editing aids grep, sed, and awk.

    A star in the darkness

    UNIX as a cammand line program is mostly like a dark night and this book for sure is like a bright star helps you find your way. It is so easy that a beginner can read and learn about UNIX and have fun running and palying with it. I give it 4 star because it sometimes has too much explaination about an easy issue and miss some more basic information which can help the reader get stronger with UNIX. It is still the only book teaches you and be sure won't waiste your time. It gives you confidence with UNIX. Another weekness of this book is some wrong commands or exercises that can be fixed in 3rd edition. The nice thing with this book is being a hands on book. Do not read this book in a library or away from your computer. Put it on your desk with your computer because for every pages in this book, you need to practice it. It will walk you through the Master of Masters.

    This book preserved my sanity

    This is a marvelous book for beginners. You get step-by-step instructions for the usual stuff, and easily readable and very informative chapters on some things not usually covered in beginner books, like network considerations and using awk. I would have gone insane were it not for this book.

    UNIX Made Useless

    This book is real big on the "made easy" part. UNIX is a powerful and useful operating system. This book must have an audience in mind that does not probably use UNIX. If you are new to UNIX try one of the "dummies" books. They are a lot cheaper and contain just as much information. If you need a UNIX reference for real work, try one of the "advanced" titles.
    If you really want this one, wait around awhile and get it at a half price mom and pop.

Perhaps the only fault to find with curator Harris' all-encompassing survey of global textiles is too much text, because the graphics do showcase well the history, creation, and development of cloth. On the other hand, without her words, how would readers discover that Bukhara susanis (embroidered covers) are now being used to cover TV sets? Or that natives of sub-Saharan Africa wove textile images into their myths?     About the Hardback Edition...

    Harris' survey on Textiles has been a publishing hit since it first appeared in this hardback editon in 1993. And this is notable in a field full of beautiful books with beautiful pictures of beautiful textiles.

    I believe the success of this book is that it actually delivers on its promise of providing encyclopedic information, with illustrations, of the entire history of textiles from ancient times. Harris and her many contributors offer both breadth and depth here. And, happily, the text serves the illustrations and the illustrations serve the text. One can cruise through the book finding inspiration and delight or one can dig in and actually study an aspect in the history of the culture of textiles.

    Book details: large format chunky hardback, red cloth over boards with a sewn binding. In dustjacket. 3.75 pounnds. 320 pp. Something like 400 color illustrations.

    Index, Glossary, 6 pp of bibliographic information.

    To describe this book would take a book. It covers different textiles from ancient societies to present day. There are twenty-four experts that describe not only techniques but the meaning of the art in each culture. My favorite section is the first chapter that shows different types of looms. I was a little disappointed not to find any drafts; however the book is concentrating on culture.

    This book also has a list of further reading and an extensive glossary.

    The color plates alone are worth the purchase price.

    Quite possibly the best investment you will ever make

    Let me say straightaway that I know Andy Cope (one of this book's two authors) on a personal basis. We're not drinking buddies or anything, but we come from the same small town and we're fond of each other. I don't think he's famous enough yet for this to class as name dropping (though I expect that day will arrive), so why mention it?

    I mention it because, knowing him personally, I can tell you that Andy is a truly inspirational guy. He wasn't born special and he wasn't born happy, and for a long time he lived the same kind of life that most people live, making the same kinds of mistakes that most people make, and feeling sorry for himself when things weren't going his way. Then, as a student of Psychology, he noticed something - there was a vast amount of published research into the causes of human unhappiness, but hardly any about what makes people happy! At this point, he decided to do something about it, changing his life for the better along the way.

    And now you can make your life better too, by following the ideas in this down-to-earth and effective little book. You'll get carefully selected nuggets of wisdom, easy to follow examples, and straightforward exercises to get you thinking about your world and how you see it. But most of all you'll get six simple principles which you can use to help yourself become a happier person. I just can't recommend it highly enough.

    Simple and inspiring

    I first heard about co-author Andy Cope from a facilitator on a fabulous training course. I had asked the facilitator if he could recommend anybody for my company who provide dance teachers nationwide to teach dance to children. I wanted something positive, motivating and inspirational so the teachers could pass on their new found energy, enthusiasm and inspiration to the children. I borrowed this book, read it within a couple of days and found it difficult to put down. The witty sense of humour and bitesized chunks made it easy to revisit even if my reading had been interrupted. Nuggets of inspiration from quotes and anecdotes make this book wonderfully accessible without the academic jargon of positive psychology. I have now purchased this book and provided staff with a copy each. Upon revisiting it, have realised how much I had forgotten and have made a note to myself to read this on six-monthly basis to notice those mood hooverers and apply The 90/10 Principle of choosing to respond positively to those negative things that happen to us all and are out of our control. I throughly recommend this book to anyone who is wanting a simple approach to making every day life a more positive thing!

    Loved It

    I am a serial entrepreneur, a University lecturer in both Russia and the USA and an international business and peak performance consultant. As such I am used to reading a plethora of business, motivational, peak performance, coaching, team building psychology type of books. In fact I have enough books at home, on these subjects, to sink several ships. So my comments on this poor book are based upon real and theoretical personal development experience.

    This book is an easy read and gets straight to the point. Whilst the content is an amalgamation of a lot of other books I have read, I have not read a book that delivers so much, in such a concise way, in a long time. The aim of the book is in essence to get the reader to think positively about their lives and what happens to them. It tries to get readers to "reframe" what happens to them and to see things in a positive way. It uses anecdotes to illustrate the most important points which make the process of change easier to understand. It gives the reader insights into how other people/personalities can impact upon their own happiness and so affect your own brilliance. It offers sound solutions and good advice on how to fix negativity. This is a very good and thoughtful book, which should help anyone who reads it to think and act in a more positive driven way.

    For me the definitive book on mind dynamics is by Maxwell Maltz, Psychocybernetics. This book looks at how the mind works and how to reprogramme it for success. Maltz wrote his book in the 1960's and it is still the definitive guide to changing how a person views their world. The Art of Being Brilliant uses ideas present in Maltz's work, but makes how to use the ideas, much more clear and accessible. So if you want to change your life and develop a more optimistic mind frame, try reading this book as I am sure it will help.
