Carl Randolph has written a classic...move over Dale Carnegie.

No matter what business you are in, whether as an employee or a business owner, people are what makes the business go. We all are in the people business.

Learning to talk to people and "break the ice" is what this book is all about. With years of network marketing under his belt and having built teams of thousands of people Carl gives us his insight and knowledge of how to open up a conversation with strangers and than build a relationship so they become friends. As Carl says so often in the book, "People do business with people they know, like and trust because they don't care how much you know until they know how much you care."

Carl has put together a masterpiece! His logic and approach to expressing the step by step process of meeting new people has completely won me over. Personally, I have always been somewhat of a "social butterfly" but "How To Make Contacts and Win Friends" gave me the easy to read, simple refresher guidelines needed to stay on top of my game. Most importantly, I have passed several copies along to friends and teammates; some not as blessed as I with the gift of gab and I have personally observed marked improvements and increased self confidence in their approach to their business and everyday life in general. It's a very easy and uncomplicated read

This book was shared with me to read by a co-worker. It's a very easy and uncomplicated read. You may at first think that the content is what you already know but as you continue to read you'll pick up on some good techniques. It's also a refresher for those key things that we so easily forget are important. I think this is a good book for someone starting a new business or for someone who's trying to get into the arena of networking. Even if you think of yourself as a bit of a "wall-flower" this book would be a good starting point to help you interact. Overall this was a good read.

Mankind - the Parasite and the Host

Plagues and Peoples is an informative and very readable summary of the relationship between mankind and disease. The author consistently views disease as a parasite and describes the history of plagues in terms of a parasite interacting with a host population. The parasite and the host interact and, over time, reach an equilibrium within the population that allows the both the parasite and the host to survive.
The most interesting feature of the book is his portrayal of mankind not only as a host, but also as a parasite himself. He uses the term macroparasite to describe human institutions and phenomena that also drain energy and resources from producers. For example, very high taxes or rents, Medieval labor laws and practices, war, and forced migration all drain communities and nations as surely as disease. He provides excellent, while still brief, commentary on the interaction between microparasites and macroparasites and the resultant depopulation of certain areas during certain periods. One might argue that this is not a newly observed correlation, but it has certainly never been explained as clearly and succintly as it is done here.
McNeill covers a range of topics. There is, of course, discussion of the plague and mankinds response to it. There us also commentary on leprosy. Why for example, was leprosy, so common in Western Europe and the Middle East in biblical times, to dissapear in the Middle Ages. ( The answer is not what you think. ) Did syphillis originate in the Americas ? If so it may have been the Aztecs' revenge on the conquistadors. Why are there childhood diseases ?
McNeill's arguements are somtimes intuitive and are, in some cases, based on limited data, especially when he examines the history of disease in Asia and India. However, he is careful to couch his observations in limited terms and clearly points out the limitations of the data. I found this to be a refreshing break from, for example, Guns, Germs and Steel, where the author used very limited data to draw absolute conclusions.
The new introduction ( the book was first publised in 1986 )has an alternate viewpoint on AIDS. He argues that, at the moment, AIDS as an epidemic does not rank among the great killers of mankind such as the plague. He draws some interesting parallels between the current AIDS epidemic and the historical spread of syphillis. I am not sure if I agree with his position, but it was interesting to hear something other than the usual end of the world scenario that often comes out of discussions of AIDS.

Will change the way you look at the world

This is one of those handful of books that will change the way you look at our world. History will never seem quite the same when you finish.
Several earlier reviewers have done a great job of summarizing and analyzing the book. It is unfortunate that this book was given as a high school assignment, and then the students were asked to review it on Amazon. Is it any wonder they gave it 2 or 3 stars, and said it was difficult to understand? Most 15-year-olds do not have the background to fully appreciate this type of work, and unfortunately their reviews skew the book's rating.

panoramic view of history

History can be written from two major vantage points. From the top of a mountain, with broad brush strokes, showing the major streams and landmarks, the BIG picture. Spenser and Toynbee are such historians, so is this book. The other view is from the trenches, the pieces, the small connections that we find so fascinating and absorbing. I believe that the big picture view of this book is a result of how it came into being as an elaboration of a single constellation of ideas that the author discovered while working on _The Rise of the West_, he found they interesting and continued to build the structure around these ideas in this book.
The book is about a collection of related ideas:
Parasitism--as he defines two types macro and micro.
Micro is the form we are familiar with as disease, the times viruses, bacteria, protozoan begin to use us as their energy and food source, to our consternation. He further defines two flavors: epidemic and endemic. Epidemic is the form in bubonic plague that swept Europe for 500 years at regular intervals. endemic is the idea of a parasitic form like the liver flukes that effect irrigated agriculture the world over, or like the civilized childhood diseases that effect the body politic like measles, mumps, smallpox.
Macroparasitism is this author's contribution to the discussion, unique to him as far as i know. Those other human's that prey on the weaker, less organized, less mobile etc. Epidemic macro are the Mongols(which are the topic of what i think is the best chapter in the book) or those horseman like in the movie the "Seventh Samari" who sweep out of the steppes or mountains to seize the harvest. Endemic macro are the priests, kings, emperors, tax farmers, etc who take the hard earned food from the producers without adequate recompense.
Using these ideas he ventures to paint those broad strokes, those vistas in history to show how the major currents, the big pieces fit. To this end the book is very well done, always absorbing, always enough detail to support but not to overwhelm the reader. Yet pithy and curiosity arousing enough to drive you to look into his sources, the real mark of good history.
I was pleased enough to get _Rise of the West_ and will start it next.

On the fundamental side it focuses on physical principles and the impact on spectroscopy on our understanding of the building blocks or matter, while in the area of applications particular attentionis given to those in chemical analysis, photochemistry, surface characterisation, environmental and medical diagnostics, remote sensing and astrophyscis. The Fourth Edition also provides the reader with an update on laser cooling and trapping, Bose-Einstein condensation, ultra-fast spectroscopy, high-power laser/matter interaction, satellite-based astronomy and spectroscopic aspects of laser medicine. Important references are updated till 2003.

About the Author

Sune Svanberg is a professor of physics and head of the Atomic Physics Division of the Lund Institute of Technology. He is also the director of the multi-disciplinary Lund Laser Centre at the Lund University. He has extensive research experience in radiofrequency, optical and laser spectroscopy, and in the use of lasers in combustion diagnostics, environmental monitoring, and medical diagnostics and treatment, and is thus in good position to cover the vast scope of the book. Sune Svanberg has coauthored almost 500 papers and trained a large number or undergraduates and graduates in basic and applied atomic and molecular spectroscopy. He served extensively in international organisations and scientific advisory committees. He is a member of five academies and holds three honorary doctor degrees.

A millennium in a nutshell

This history of English literature is amazing in its scope: it will take you from Beowulf to Heany in just 197 pages! It seems to be written for speakers of English as a second language, since the back cover says the vocabulary used is restricted to just 2,000 words. But it is clear and really covers the bases in English literature, so it is appropriate for high school students, or for anyone wanting to know about the most important periods, movements, writers, and works of English literature in one short and easy-to-read volume. It could do with some kind of a preface to explain its goals and target audience; it has none. And the words defined in the footnotes are often very easy (like 'professor'), while difficult allusions (e.g. in Milton) are sometimes not glossed. But overall, this is an excellent work. I used it to teach a class of Taiwan senior high school girls who had mostly lived abroad before. While the material was quite difficult for them, the course seems to have been a success. We covered 12 of the 15 chapters in two semesters, which brought us up to the 20th century. I used a thicker history of English literature (Moody and Lovett) to prepare myself for the class, and chose and copied sample texts of selected writers from the Internet so the students could have a firsthand experience of some of the works. We all gained a lot from this course, and I would definitely stick with the same textbook if I did it again.

Fascinante y controvertido

Este libro es fascinante. Robert Sepehr entreteje maravillosamente los hechos cient�ficos actuales con los viejos mitos, y se atreve a abordar lo que la academia simplemente se niega a enfrentar, como el hecho pol�mico de que somos, de hecho, una especie h�brida. Robert lo demuestra explicando los nuevos hallazgos en el genoma humano y el registro arqueol�gico en un formato f�cil de entender, sin embargo, de manera sofisticada. After Ayatollah Khomeini came to power in Iran, Shirazi’s family immigrated to London. Bullied by her classmates and beaten by her stepfather, she fell hard for rock ’n’ roll and embarked on a splintered existence that saw her studying at university while attending rock concerts with the express purpose of bedding musicians, among them members of Guns N’ Roses and Velvet Revolver. Shirazi makes no bones about her passion for operating in “full sleaze mode” and of the pleasure she took in outfitting herself in stilettos and corsets. What tripped her up was her attempt to extract love and reassurance from her sexcapades. More sad than sexy.

I just finished this book, and it was a quick and easy read compared to what I normally read. As a child of the 80's metal hair bands myself--and a huge music fan, I was curious. I have personally been invited backstage for many concerts during that era (I looked like a tart when I was 16) scouted by road managers asking 'do you want to meet the band?' . Only to immediately protest that I was only a fan, and that I had to be at school in the morning--the moment I'd get backstage. Great White, twisted sister, iron maiden, judas priest...met them all at the height of their popularity. Yet, while my appearance stated otherwise...I would never have dreamed of sleeping with anyone in the bands I met. Therefore, I felt like reading this book would present the other side of the coin. What would life for me have been like if I had? Roxanna was someone not unlike myself, and yet she was on the dark side. I thought this was her memoir of a misspent youth chasing rockstars in their glory days. What a let down. This is about very recent history...of a woman willing to degrade herself in every conceivable way for washed up rockstars whose light faded decades ago. Her defiant 'slut and proud' mantra was not at all convincing, but rather hollow and sad. She was desperate for love, affection and attention,which it seems she has still not achieved to this date. I loved reading about her childhood in Tehran, and her relationship with her family....but little of her relationship with her family was explored in her 'slut' years. Did they know how promiscuous she was? Her bi-sexuality and multiple sex partner (often at the same time). Well...they sure know now! How did they feel about it? Her younger siblings? She explained she lived a double-life, but then suddenly she was telling her mom about her pregnancy from a lowlife rocker and impending abortion. Other than a sentence about her mom complaining that the men she dated being beneath her, there was no other feedback. There was an opportunity there to bring the story from her beginnings in Tehran, the molestations, the groupie life and then Mum into a full loop. I also take issue with her protection of this hypocritical politician who was a slime bucket, while freely throwing the names of the band members. Seems hypocritical on her part to me.

I didn't love it. I didn't hate it. It was a page turner...but it ultimately disappointed me with it's lack of sincerity and sad message.

Little common sense and lots of drugs

There are things in this story that simply don't add up. For example, spoiler alert, the book starts with Nikki sixx taking Shirazi and a friend out on a date, and when sixx mentions his interest in gardening, shirazi draws a blank. How is it possible for someone who was pursuing academic as a second passion next to sex to be so bland and blah ? In a sense the " I'm with the band" and " groupie " life style is like the life style of a geisha, except you choose the man. The book gives you the vibe that shirazi was waiting for one of her rock stars to fall in love with her and sweep her off her feet. One can't help but wonder, the reason it didn't happen was because of the fact that her whole life was based on sex. No common sense, no conversation, no knowledge of anything but he sleaze rock scene. Another spoiler, she has unprotected sex with dizzy reed on their second date. I'm quite sure there has got to be a rule in the groupie handbook about having protected sex and importance of it, for reasons like STDs and AIDS. On and all, I felt bad for shirazi. She is snobby towards the older groupies who really have to fight the younger ones to appeal to rock stars, when in fact she is turning into one of them. It is a good fluff read for say a bus stop or waiting in line at the grocery store ( I have it on kindle so it's easier ), but there is nothing interesting about this book.this is the tale of a. Unsuccessful groupie.

Roxana Shirazi's The Last Living Slut is a pathetic portrait of both groupie and group. The has-been rock stars come off as callous, and the never-beens as (understandably) bitter. Shirazi tries hard, a bit too hard, to paint herself as the ultimate hedonist: her fond reminiscences of flirting with boys and masturbating with a stick at the tender age of four had me rolling my eyes. Her assertion that she kind of enjoyed being fondled by a pervy old man as a child is stomach-turning.

Shirazi's description of her double life - pursuing her advanced degree in literature by day, bedding down with hair metal bands at night - is a refreshing change from the usual groupie tale. She may be eager for a taste of fame from the lips of the likes of Axl Rose (or the overwhelmingly less-famous Dizzy Reed), but she isn't planning on riding on anyone's coattails to the top. She'd rather ride on something else...

The dirty details of the riding are nicely balanced with raw accounts of loss and heartache.

Despite her eloquence, openness and apparent genuine caring for other groupies in her circle, Shirazi comes across as self-centred and unlikeable. Her tendency to lapse into poetically overwrought descriptions, particularly towards the end of the book, is also off-putting.

The book is structured like a coming-of-age story, but one neither feels like the author has truly matured at the end, nor had any innocence to begin with.

The Last Living Slut is disappointing, as disappointing as Shirazi's life of humping fallen stars in monotonous succession.

A useful guide for applying Ayn Rand's ethics to business

Anyone who's perplexed about how to be an ethical person and yet run a successful business can benefit from Woiceshyn's book. She argues that rational self-interest (as defined by Ayn Rand) is moral, and that applying it to one's business is the best way to maximize long-term profit. How To Be Profitable and Moral is filled with concrete examples (Bernie Madoff, Dominic D'Alessandro, Alcoa, WorldCom, and many others) of how moral principles affect business success. The book begins with a theoretical case of a software company deciding whether to outsource jobs, and frequently returns to that example to show the application of each point discussed. In addition, Woiceshyn uses case studies raised by students and colleagues to show how the principles she discusses apply to real business situations.

I spent years in academe, and I know from experience that a professor writing on an abstract topic such as philosophy can churn out some of the most convoluted prose you've ever seen. It pleases me enormously that Woiceshyn writes as one sensible person to another, with enthusiasm rather than jargon. And instead of the usual dense blocks of text, the book's layout is reader-friendly: headings and subheadings that show the main points at a glance, summaries and quizzes to encourage the reader to stop and digest. I highly recommend this book for those who are interested in how Ayn Rand's ideas apply to business: it's a very useful overview and guide.

Enjoyable and useful guide to rational business principles

Jaana Woiceshyn's book is an invaluable guide for anyone engaged in business, whether as an entrepreneur, manager or an employee. Everyone will benefit from the advice and guidance that the author provides for Bob Miller, the imaginary company president in her book. Acting according to the moral principles Dr. Woiceshyn discusses will clearly not only enhance your business and professional performance, it will also improve the quality of your personal life and relationships. The book contains plenty of real-life examples from the business world illustrating its theme. It's also devoid of any academic jargon; instead it goes straight to the point. A pleasurable read!

Addresses fundamental question and provides advice

This book addresses a fundamental question faced by business people, thus everyone since business is part of our lives - can business be both moral and profitable, if so how can you make decisions that support both goals?

It begins with an example of a dilemma faced by the owner of a business that is not profitable. It identifies the morality of each resolution the owner thought of, and discusses each.

Integral to the book is advice for decision-making in business. The author provides varying examples from reality, of both business strategy and ethical situations employees and owners find themselves in, all tied to principles.

Not a thick book, it has solid content, ultimately distilled to a number of principles. Topics are as diverse as the role of emotions and rationality.

While covering a number of codes of morality, the book is ultimately based on what works for human life, an ethical system that supports business as a good occupation while explaining how to achieve that in decision making for profitability. That morality is "rational egoism", per the sub-title of the book.

I urge thinking business people to read the book and give copies to others (including people who don't run businesses but need to understand - such as employees), students to study alongside prescribed texts, and educators to include in curricula.
