An interesting time capsule that takes the "new" out of new media

Rapid technological changes have a way of making new media scholarship obsolete very quickly. At seven years old, this book is well past its usefulness. (In fairness I should have paid more attention to the date of publication before I purchased it.) The book actually serves as an interesting time capsule: remember when iTunes was revolutionary, when HDTVs were crazy expensive, when smart phones were status symbols, when people talked about "postmodernism" and "web 2.0" like they were revolutionary ideas, or when Attack of the Clones was an impressive example of digital film making? (No, I don't remember that last one either.) But the book is of limited use if you want to know about what is "new" in new media past 2007. Also, personally, I did not find the individual articles particularly impressive in their writing, scholarship, or originality—though it's hard to tell if the last two are a product of their age.

This is an excellent text for my college course in the history of media. I would highly recommend it to anyone who is curious about the media we take for granted.

Excellent, Comprehensive Book on Christian Leadership

This book is one of the best titles I have read that applies specifically to Christian leaders. There are many works available that address leadership in general, but ones that give a uniquely Christian perspective are harder to find. Marshall has an excellent work here, and I recommend it highly to all Christian leaders. I especially recommend it to young pastors who are preparing for a life of service as a pastor.
Everything rises and falls on good Christian leadership. In twenty years of pastoral ministry, I have seen many of Marshall's principles verified through my own mistakes and shortcomings. This book will be a great help in avoiding many of the pitfalls that plague Christian leaders.

A Life Saver

After many heart-wrenching experiences in ministry throughout the years and observing the spiritual abuse of power others wielded, this book has proven to be a life saver. It is a must read for any Christian and especially anyone that serves in any capacity of leadership. The Servant Leadership principles are fantastic as well as understanding the danger of power and how easily it can corrupt even the best intentions.

While this is primarily a Christian leadership book the reality is that "truth" is "truth" and anyone can glean a wealth of it from this book and good principles that apply to everyone. Buy it! You won't be dissappointed.

New Leadership Concept

I found this book fascinating in what Tom Marshall viewed as the most important function of leaders; service to those they lead. I am in the military and, for me, this book hit home in how he reminds leaders that humility and desire to serve others are vital to success. In being a servant to others, we must place their needs first and think of their welfare before our own. Also included are great discussions concerning pride, self healing and ministry. Yes, a Christian book, but the philosophy is beautiful and can be applied by anyone who feels a desire to be a responsible servant/leader to others.

When the plot of your first novel partially hinges on anarchist overthrows funded by soap sales, and the narrative hook of your second work is the black box recorder of a jet moments away from slamming into the Australian outback, it stands to reason that your audience is going to be ready for anything. Which, to an author like Chuck Palahniuk, must sound like a challenge. Palahniuk's third identity crisis (that's "novel" to you), Invisible Monsters, more than ably responds to this call to arms. Set once again in an all-too-familiar modern wasteland where social disease and self-hatred can do more damage than any potboiler-fiction bad guy, the tale focuses particularly on a group of drag queens and fashion models trekking cross-country to find themselves, looking everywhere from the bottom of a vial of Demerol to the end of a shotgun barrel. It's a sort of Drugstore Cowboy-meets-Yentl affair, or a Hope-Crosby road movie with a skin graft and hormone-pill obsession, if you know what I mean.

Um, yeah. Anyway, the Hollywood vibe doesn't stop these comparisons. As with Fight Club and Survivor, the book is invested with a cinematic sweep, from the opening set piece, which takes off like a house afire (literally), to a host of filmic tics sprayed throughout the text: "Flash," "Jump back," "Jump way ahead," "Flash," "Flash," "Flash." You get the idea. It's as if Palahniuk didn't write the thing but yanked it directly out of the Cineplex of his mind's eye. Does it succeed? Mostly. Still working on measuring out the proper dosages of his many writerly talents (equal parts potent imagery, nihilistic coolspeak, and doped-out craziness), Palahniuk every now and then loosens his grip on the story line, which at points becomes as hard to decipher as your local pill addict's medicine cabinet. However Invisible Monsters works best on a roller-coaster level. You don't stop and count each slot on the track as you're going down the big hill. Along comes no-nonsense, pill-popping diva Brandy Alexander, a resplendent, sassy, transgendered chick, who has modeled her body rearrangement--the breast implants, the hair, the figure--on what Shannon used to look like. Brandy suggests veils, high camp and no self-pity. Shannon wants revenge[...] Adding to the plot's contrivances are the relentless flashbacks, heralded at the beginning of almost every paragraph with "Jump back to..." and the author's pretentious device of using a fashion photographer's commands ("Flash. Give me adoration. Flash. Give me a break") to signpost the narrator's epiphanies. Palahniuk writes like he's overdosed on Details magazine. Though the absurd surprise ending may incite groans of disbelief, this book does have fun moments when campy banter tops the heroine's flat, whiny bathos. (Sept.) This is a wild ride of a novel. The narrator is an unnamed fashion model who's had her lower jaw shot off in an ambush. In the hospital, she meets her new mentor, the Princess Brandy Alexander, who is in the middle of a year-long gender reassignment process. Together, they launch a picaresque voyage of revenge on the narrator's ex-best friend, model Evie, and ex-boyfriend, vice cop Manus, who were having an affair before the shooting. Along the way they pick up Sean, whom they are inexplicably feeding gender-altering pharmaceuticals without his knowledge. The novel opens with its climax, then jumps around the narrator's life, introducing her crazy parents, her ostensibly dead brother, and the nun-nurse who is trying to fix her up with other patients who have suffered disfiguring accidents. No one is who he or she seems to be, and the challenge is to figure out who is morphing into whom. By the end, most readers will be both exhausted and exhilarated. George Needham

Very dated

I can tell it's the type of book I would like and think edgy when I was 18 to 25. Now the angst and disillusionment this book is steeped in holds very little for me. I thought the twists were eye roll moments for me. Chuck's cleverness and prose is really good. He has a symmetrical and poetic way of writing; however, the plot, content and characters were horrible. For me this book is a waste of time. I really enjoyed Fight Club and Survivor, and as I started picking up reading again I thought I would enjoy another of Chuck's books and at least this one wasn't for me. But to be honest, this dark "edgy" type of writing probably isn't for me anymore.

Nail-biting, jaw-dropping ride from beginning to end...

I love this book. It is a nail-biting, jaw-dropping ride from beginning to end. The characters can be loved and hated all within the span of a few pages. Definitely not for the faint of heart. Definitely a book I will read again and again, but probably not until I'm ready for another roller coaster ride.

I would guess that a movie version of this book would easily have an R rating. Just a heads up. Chuck is brilliant, but he is also blunt and not afraid to make his characters bold, brazen, and proud to be that way.

Amazing!

This is one of my favorite Chuck Palahniuk books. If you're a fan of his writing, I would definitely recommend you get this book ASAP. It's dark, a little twisted and all around great. This is the type of book that you want to bring every where you go so that you can read more any chance you get, even if it is just another page.

A Lingering Sense of Hope

'Until Angels Close My Eyes' is yet another example of Lurlene McDaniel's notoriously melancholy novels. As in her other books, McDaniels is able to portray a sorrowful mood through the characters. However, the final outcome is both depressing and uplifting at the same time. Had the book not had a little hope to cling on to at the end, I wouldn't have enjoyed reading it, but it did. The final message was that in the end, not all was lost.
Leah Lewis-Hall is a seventeen year old english teenager living with her mother and stepfather, Neil. Neil was Leah's mom's fourth and favorite husband, so Leah hoped he was around to stay. She was looking forward to living the rest of her life with just her, Neil, and her mother, that is until she was shot down with devastating news. Neil has cancer. A malignant cancer that could threaten his life. Leah liked Neil, a lot, and didn't want to see yet another father figure dissappear from her life, especially one she cared about so much. On top of that heart-breaking news, Leah had to face the reality that the cancer she once had could also return. So Leah had to live in constant fear of two lives being lost, hers, but mainly Neil's.
There was only one person that provided Leah with the comfort she needed to get through it all. Ethan, her sandy-haired, blue-eyed Amish boyfriend. She had met Ethan last summer while working in an Amish community, and instantly they fell in love with each other. The only problem was that Ethan was Amish, and Leah was English. The two worlds clashed immensly and there was a huge barrier inbetween the two cultures. Lately, Ethan had been experimenting with English ways, dressing English, and even moving out of his Amish household to live with Leah and her family. Leah and Ethan both knew their love was genuine and pure,and they both needed and cherished this love. But they also knew that this culture barrier between them could cause problems for both of their lives. Can Ethan and Leah's love hang tough through the biggest hurdeles of their lives? Can they defy the barrier between their two seperate worlds?
Although there is almost a sad tone throughout the whole book, there are instances that shine through with hope. For example, the angel Gabriella that saves Leah from her cancer, and the changed view from Leah on her mother. At the end of the novel, Leah had a new respect for her mother that came from all of her past and recent experiences. I enjoyed reading this novel because McDaniel balanced Neil's deteriorating cancer condition with certain episodes of hope that made you want to keep reading. The questions,"Will Neil live or die?" and, "Will Leah and Ethans love be able to hang tough?" are not really answered until the last few chapters. This factor makes 'Until Angels Close My Eyes' a quick read that you won't want to put down. My advice is, if you've never seen somebody turn something negative into a postive thing, read this book!!

Until Angels Close My Eyes was a very heart-warming novel

Leah is a strong young lady who is trying to complete the puzzle of her life that has never been finished. When she was sixteen-years-old she was diagnosed of bone cancer and the only thing she could hope for was a miracle, but instead she received the light of angels. After a while everything in Leah's life was going fine till she received the news that her loving stepfather, Neil had cancer. Leah didn't know what to do with herself, so she decided she needed a brake and to visit her true love Ethan at the Amish community. Ethan chose to make one of the most effective changes in his and Leah's life that left Leah in a complex situation that made her realize the reality ahead of her.

Until Angels Close my Eyes is an amazing book to read it pulls you in and gives you the picture of Leah's life. McDaniel made the characters and plot so realistic that I felt as if I was standing there with Leah and watching her grow into the strong young women she really is thought out the story.

Until Angels Close My Eyes is a beautiful story about love and what it takes to reach it. I would recommend this outstanding novel to anyone and everyone. If you enjoyed one of the books from the Angels Trilogy you would definitely take pleasure in this one. You also might end this book in tears.

WIll Their Love Last?

The book, Until Angels Close My Eyes by Lurlene McDaniel is a great book. Leah (main character) thinks her battle with cancer is over, but the disease that haunts her past has struck someone she loves. Leah finds comfort in a visit to Amish country to see Ethan. Ethan (boyfriend) is changing, his taste in what community he wants to live in. Can their love stay together through all these changes??
On a rating, one through five, five being the best, I would rate this book a four. It was a great book, but it could have had a little more development in the beginning it was kind of slow. There could have been not so much background information. Once it started to pick-up, I couldn't put it down. The author had a great story line. It was realistic, easy to fallow, and I could put myself in Leah's position. You could tell she put a lot of effort in her book. I thought the description of the cancer was very in-depth. She used all the terms in which the doctors would really use. Not just in this book, but also in all of her books I have read.
