Read, Plan, Read Again, Review, Implement

Virtualization is not something one should go at without fully understanding the implications; as a consultant I have seen thousands of environments over the last 14 years and over the last few more and more are attempting to virtualize whether with VMWare or another product. Most have gotten everything wrong and thus the benefits they anticipated from virtualizing have failed to be seen. This book is where one should start and read it twice. Understanding the concepts and planning thoroughly are the roots to a successful deployment and to successfully scaling out what the final goal is. VMWare isn't about simply taking Exchange, SQL, File Sharing, MOSS, and a host of other products and dumping them on a single set of hardware to save money - no there is so much more to it than that. Get the book, read the book and you'll understand.

Amazing book designed for any one and everyone!

I am an IT computer professional by trade. I don't normally go for the Dummies books, but when I needed to know more about VMWare I shopped around and got this book. Boy was I glad I did. It was very easy to understand, and Mr. Lowe has a great sense of humor as well. This book has something for everyone, whether you are a manager an executive or an IT professional this book has what you need. Great book... Highly recommended!

Reconsidering reading or giving this book to friends and family

The quotes used (802) are an amazingly broad and valuable compilation of sound bytes for LDS folk. However, there is heavy use of Brigham Young and other enemies of Joseph Smith in order to establish the points the author wants to make. Those who have awakened to the truth of who Brigham Young actually was and what he actually destroyed, based on new historical information coming to light, may not value using BY to anchor the author's premises. According to the author, some of what's in this book was ghost written and tightly edited by another published author, his mother, and so the voice changes noticeably throughout. By extracting and compiling only the bolded quotes in this book, another separate and quite different book emerges, showing the author's personal agenda.

No need to spend time on this.

Marketed for current members of the Church of the Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The collection of quotes from LDS Church leaders and the Scriptures is admirable. However, many of the author's conclusions and "truths" are off. Some ideas have no source (like the destruction of metro areas in the US?), so I can only assume the author has come up with them on his own, and to market them as "truth" doesn't work for me. The tone of his writing is not enjoyable (he types in ALL CAPS a lot) and has a condescending feel to it. I could not finish the book entirely as the writing and format got old. I would not recommend this to anyone, if you do read any of it, be very careful. From the author's blog, he believes the Church leadership has fallen. There is much better reading out there worth your time (like the scriptures, living prophets and apostles) instead of having to wade through this and exercise your discernment at every page.

Bret... fantastic. As soon as I started reading this book I could hardly put it down. First of all, I love the large format and the way each chapter is organized. It is so easy on the eye and make each subject so understandable. I like the fact that every chapter is one "Truth." It makes going back and reviewing a subject so easy.

I like the kind, soft approach you have taken toward sensitive subjects, but still being direct and not backing down on your thesis. I'm in full agreement with all you have written and you have expressed it so well. I’m impressed on how well the book is documented. You have left no stone unturned and have included such a variety of sources.

It is a book that every “Truth seeking” member of the LDS church should read if they have the desire to seek Christ first, and want to become a person prepared to establish Zion. I have no problem giving this book 5 stars. Thanks again for your insight.

Very easy to read yet very effective

This book was an easier read than many hypnosis books on the market. There are also many relaxation scripts to help get beginners started. I have been exposed to many types of hypnosis practices and I must say that I like self-hypnosis the best, but I do feel that some exposure to a professional can be very beneficial. I have been using this book as an aid for about 4 months and I must say the changes are indescribable. I have lost weight (a lot!), become more disciplined in my studies and have a more rewarding relationship with my boyfriend of 4 years. Also, since the suggestions are my own that I am giving, then I am not as prone to accept suggestions from others and as result, I am more aware of negative energy amongst other people and don't take it on. This is a great book and in conjuction with other tools such as relaxation, some exposure to personal therapy, it can/will have amazing effects and the that is the truth!

If you care about yourself and well being, this book is for you! The book is easy to read and enjoyable. You can apply self-hypnosis to almost anything in your daily life. There's no magic in hypnosis, it's all about the positive attitude and response. The book in general has very good tips on how to relax and have a better way to live.

Many years ago I studied hypnosis formally and even received my hypnotherapist certification at that time. I have not been active in this field for more than twenty years and I decided to purchase this book, which I saw on amazon at a bargain price.

Even though this book (Healing yourself with Self-Hypnosis) was published more than 15 years ago, most of the material is still valid today. I consider self-hypnosis as merely a form of focused meditation, but it has the extra positive value of improving various aspects of one’s life. This is a revised and expanded edition of a classic guide to achieving health and peace of mind.

This 272 page text is organized into 18 interesting and informative chapters. Some of the material covered in this volume includes the following: A basic introduction to using self-hypnosis for a new way to successful living. Theories, fallacies and facts about hypnosis, how and why hypnosis works, the conscious and subconscious mind, the 4-A’s method of self-hypnosis, the power of hypnosis to help you control your weight, give up bad habits, cure insomnia, improve your sex life, and many other topics. Do not pass up the appendix sections because it has some vital tips and therapeutic suggestions.

In conclusion, if you are seeking to improve all aspects of your life through the practice of self-hypnosis, this is the book for you. I found it an excellent basic refresher course as I was familiar with most of the material in this book.

A quick Amazon search reveals 3,523 pregnancy books on the market. How many of these are written for the mother? About 3,510. A dozen others use sarcasm and exaggerated humor -- often at the expense of the pregnant mother -- rather than useful information to draw the heathen male into the future world of parenting. There has got to be a better way for a father-to-be to learn what he has gotten himself into.
Fortunately there is. The Expectant Father is that 3,523rd book. It is a well-written, month-by-month explanation of what is going on both emotionally and physically with the mother, the baby, and you the father. At 250 pages plus references, it is packed with information while still being portable. It doesn't necessarily go into a great amount of detail on each subject, but it mentions most important things at least in passing, and you can always refer to the Internet or What to Expect... (which your partner will undoubtedly have on her nightstand) for more details.
Be forewarned: this book is slightly new-agey at points. But hey, Brott is just offering suggestions that the reader is free to ignore. Overall this is a useful reference written with the father-to-be in mind as a principal reader, not an afterthought.

I have generally been disappointed by other books because they were too low on content (The Pocket Idiot's Guide to Being an Expectant Father) and/or very high on stupid, often crass, jokes (The Guy's Guide to Surviving Pregnancy, Childbirth and the First Year of Fatherhood; The New Dad's Survival Guide). The driving assumption for these books seems to have been that men are stupid and require juvenile humor to remain engaged. Thankfully, Armin Brott's "The Expectant Father" is an exception to that rule.

The greatest asset of the book is its comprehensive nature. Brott covers it all, month by month. He discusses countless physiological, psychological, emotional, and logistical issues that are likely to confront most new parents, specifically speaking from the perspective of the father. There were a few times when my wife would read a paragraph or two over my shoulder, and she was surprised to actually read some information that she had not read in any of the eight pregnancy books that she had already finished. I appreciated the fact that Brott seems to assume that there are thoughtful, intelligent men out there who want to learn as much as possible to help their wives as much as possible through pregnancy and to transition well into fatherhood, and he offers substantial information accordingly.

My primary critiques of this book actually resonate with many who gave it a one-star rating. Though I think such a low rating does not sufficiently reflect the very helpful information that is included, I agree with others that this book seemed to have a bizarre overemphasis on the role of fathers in pregnancy and parenting. Frankly speaking, no matter how much some men may wish otherwise, we are not equal partners with our wives in the pregnancy process. In fact, it's not even close. There is no person growing inside of me! I am convinced that my needs and my issues are clearly of secondary importance to the needs and issues of my wife during this time, and maintaining that prioritization seems to be rather important. But Brott's book is so father-centered as to at least occasionally lose sight of that reality.

I also found the final chapter, "Fathering Today," to be a rather whining, pathetic diatribe against anything that might suggest that mothers can play a more prominent role than fathers in raising children. I'm certainly a huge proponent of fathers being highly involved in raising their kids. That's why I'm reading lots of books about this stuff. But I am perfectly comfortable with the notion that there are things that my wife knows and can do for our baby that I simply can't offer. Some of those differences may be experiential and culturally-based, but I am convinced that some of them are innate. Brott seems to bristle at that idea, sprinkling his father-focused position throughout the book and ending with an entire chapter as a final attempt to debunk any idea that mothers are inherently better equipped to do some things for their kids. I just think he's trying to buck human nature with mere wishful thinking.

My frustrations aside, I'm still quite glad to have read this book. I feel significantly better equipped to enter the crazy world of fatherhood after having read "The Expectant Father." I may even be able to help my wife in some small way during the rapidly approaching birth of our first kid because of the information that I learned. It is long and periodically rather dry, but it's definitely worth the effort. A few strange assumptions by the author notwithstanding, I'm happy to recommend it to any man willing to invest some time towards learning about this most important event and all that is to follow.

This is the ONLY book to buy for expectant dads

My wife just had our first child a few months ago. While she was pregnant two of our friends gave me copies of The Expectant Father, which they recommended highly. I have to agree. I'd been reading my wife's pregnancy books, which were absolutely useless--they barely mentioned dads at all except to say that I should be sensitive to my wife's needs, which I already knew. And I'd checked out a few of the other pregnancy books for dads but they were so condescending and insulting that I practically gave up reading altogether.
This book is completely different. It deals with men's concers in a straightforward, sensitive, funny way. It's filled with very insightful information that helped me make sense of the feelings I was having during my wife's pregnancy and activities that I could do to stay involved. It's not always easy to take the stand to be an involved dad and this book helped me realize that I wasn't alone in what I was going through. I know that this book has helped me be a better father than I ever would have before. I'll be giving it to all my buddies whose wives are expectant. AND, I've already started the next book in the series, The New Father: A Dad's Guide to the First Year. It's great too!
